Today paulmdx and myself went to the English National Badminton Championships in Manchester. It was fairly dark for photography but I managed to get a few good shots and would like to know what you think.

All shots are uncropped from the originals.

Thanks. I used my Canon 50mm F1.8, virtually all the shots were taken at 1600 iso and F1.8 beacuse of the lighting.

That's cool. Most people have no idea how rigorous a sport competitive badminton is. |

I especially like the last shot - unison shot, tilted, two women and the first one. Gives the game a new perspective.

i play badminton but plan to improve my skill level alot. Badminto is amazing game and a very stamina intensive game. Two main reason for that are shuttle is very light and hence lot of physical powere needed to hit a feather shuttle in and indoor court plus everytime an opponent breaks serve he gets to serve unlike tennis despite breaking serve person who served will continue for rest of the game.

I cannot believe you are talking about Badminton! That is like my Favorite sport to play.. I played Badminton for 5 years in High school where me and my friend played Doubles, we went around playing and won alot of medals, which are in a box somewhere. I would love to play again....the best sport ever. Very nice shots...really enjoyed them
Dreaming of the old days of being on the Badminton Team

Ahaa...badminton. I coach our school's varsity team and am playing a lot too. The badminton season will start soon (16 February) and my goal is for our team to maintain our last year's top finish in the competition among some South East Asian International schools. Your shots are inspiring...maybe I should take more action shots of my team. Thanks for the tips. |

I have Paulmdx to thank for that, he managed to talk his way in to getting us a couple of Staff passes, so we pretty much had a free run of the whole event. It certainly felt good walking around with a press badge and bib :-)

Afraid I don't have enough knowledge of badminton to answer that ;-) However the matches were highly competitive, they certainly impressed me.

And if you've not had enough Badmington shots already, please see:
Badmington 2004 (Good few to download; they get better to the bottom.)
All were taken with a Sigma 28-70/2.8 EX DF. Range-wise it was excellent for the event, but the aperture in such dark conditions was a little too small. All shots were ISO 1600.

I played with MelKing23 back in the day [hi Mel!] and trained for the Canada Games in high school, I was also coaching/teaching it last year at high schools and at a local YMCA in Calgary, it's a great sport and very technical..too bad only nerds play it now ;-)
P.S. Great action shots :-)
P.P.S. I hate Yonex
