well, i didn't read everything, but i just wanted to throw in my opinion..

I had a f717 before, and was trying to decide what to buy next, since quite a few newer cameras came out.. I debated between the 300D and the 828 for MONTHS, until i asked myself how much money i wanted to spend, and what kind of photos i was taking.

I had compared the image quality at the store by bringing my own memory and testing both from the same spot, and then looking at the photos at home, and that gave me one point towards the 828; I very much liked the images i got out of it at that location. This isn't of course a very extensive test, but thats just the impression i got back then.

After i told myself i didn't want to spend several thousand dollars for a new camera (which the 300D would probably entail../ there was no way i was going to live with less zoom range than i previously had with the 717, and since the 828's lense is a F2.0-F2.8 28-200mm lense.. that would be quite expensive to get on a DSLR (wide angle, zoom and macro.. i'd be hard pressed to get 1 lense that does it all on the DSLR, and the price of that lense(s) would be above what i'd pay for the body)

after all that, I had convinced myself the 828 was the right choice for me. I dont usually take high ISO photos, so the grainyness of the high ISO setting in the 828 wasn't a concern for me... Some people complained of "purple fringing" with the 828.. thats a 2 second fix with a photoshop action.. There really wasn't a down side anymore for me getting the 828.

Once i got it, i haven't regretted it. It takes great pictures.. The focusing is lightspeeds ahead of the 717, it really gets close to a DSLR sometimes..

I took some shots this weekend with it that might show what it can do.. you can find them here: //refracted.rmcreations.ca/weekend1/

If you have any questions, dont hesitate to message me, i'd be happy to anser them.

I own a F828 but get the chance to use a 300D at school for Yearbook. Looks like everyone here already covered the features of both camera.

I personally like the 828's design/software/interface better than the 300D. It feels a lot better in your hands[the magnesium alloy body gives it a nice sturdy feel too]. The buttons are positioned very effectively. The ability to select multiple images to delete is nice too. And the swivel lens...All these make the 828 feel much better in your hands and thats a big plus for me.

Doesnt the 828 have more zoom than the 717?

I did a zoom comparision w/ my 828 and my aunt's 717. The 717 actually zoomed in a bit more than the 828. Why is that? 828 has a 200mm and 717 has a 190mm

I've been thinking about this for some time, and for now, I'm gonna stick with a prosumer camera. I currently have the Sony F707, but if I upgrade, I'll get the 828 or similar camera. I can get special lenses for it from 8x telephoto to fisheye wide and any filter I want, so for me, for now, this is all I need at a fraction of the cost of a DSLR. I'll probably change my mind someday, but for now (or I should say, when I raise the money....)

When I upgraded from the F717 to the 10D I found that there was no comparison in the experience of taking photos with a DLSR. I really enjoy the ability to swap lenses. You just can't get the same effect from an F717 or an F828 that you can from, say, an f/1.4 50mm lens wide open. I like the speed of the camera's operation and the noiseless images it produces.

However...it all depends on the type of shots you like to take. If I were buying a camera for landscape photography, or general walkabout/travel shots, then go with a Sony. Landscape photography doesn't require fast focus or instantaneous operation, and the large depth of field found in the Sonys is much more forgiving. They're also much easier to carry around. I shlepped my 10D around Europe this summer and it was no fun at all. I got some good shots but I'm looking for a small camera to travel with.

My line was about the fact that i'd have to buy many lenses for the 300D if i wanted to cover the same range as the 717 or 828, at those apertures. The 828 is indeed 200mm at the telephoto end, and the 717 is 190mm, but i haven't noticed what you mentioned about the 717 zooming more.. make sure you dont have digital zoom enabled on the 717...
