What's the problem with editing the background layer? I always do it, but I work on a copy of the file.

I guess I just experiment too much and am too lazy to start over when I can just delete the duplicate layer I was working on, or maybe I'm just paranoid. :) I could see how someone with your skills wouldn't need to mess with it. :)

Thanks :)
Besides that, I have set the history in PS to 50 steps

AhHa! See I didn't even know you could do that. Learn something new everyday I tell ya. ;-)

I used gel on piece of thick glass for my entry. I'd like to try some of the other methods I've read about here, specifically hairspray on a filter and pantyhose. Any other methods?

Oh, and score: 5.84

Went up a little =) At least I finally got a comment. It was constructive criticism ;)

I can't say what I did because it would easily identify my pic. But I did not use any filters. I'd say tho, it must not be pleasing to the eye because I am sitting at a 5.05 at the moment - which is actually the highest it has been so far lol.

Still slowly creeping up...what does it mean if someone says your picture is a snapshot?

Having read through all that has been said about adding Types of processing to an image in basic editing, and what is legal and what is not, I read the topics from the creators of PHOTSHOP.

About the background layer.

When you create a new image with a white or colored background, the bottom most image in the layers pallet is called BACKGROUND. An image can have only one background. You cannot change the stacking order of a background, its blending mode, or it̢۪s opacity. However you can convert a background to a regular Layer.
.

To create a new layer with the same effects as an existing layer

1. Select the existing layer in the layers pallete.
2. Drag the layer to the new layer button at the bottom of the layers pallete. The new ly created layer contains all the effects of the existing one.
IE; background copy.

Merging and stamping layers.

When you have finalized the content of layers, you can merge them to reduce the size of your image files. When you merge layers. The data on the top layers replaces the overlapped data on the lower layers. The intersection of all transparent areas in the merged layers remains transparent.

Note: You cannot use an adjustment layer or fill layer as the Target layer for a merge.

From this I can see no difference from an adjustment layer or its equivalent background copy.

As Gaussian blur is not available in adjustment layer there are 2 options for the processor .

1. Use an equivalent background copy and add Gaussian blur and reduce the fill opacity, not the pixel opacity to achieve the effect required, and merge back to the background original the same as done with adjustment layers, remembering this data replaces the overlapped data on the lower layers in both cases.
2. Apply Gaussian blur direct to the background layer, and edit fade Gaussian blur opacity, this applies exactly same information to the background as the first option, as this also overlaps data on the background layer.

When you believe you have done it right, and are told sorry DQ. I like to see where the rules have been violated in this case I cannot see any, as all results are the same.

In basic, the only layers allowed are adjustment layers, and you can blend them at whatever percentage you want but only in normal mode. That's been that way for a long time.

As for gaussian blur, you're right, there is no adjustment layer for gaussian, however, you can apply gaussian to your background layer and then fade the effect at whatever percentage you want, in normal mode. Using a duplicate layer, however similar the final result is to doing it the other way, is not allowed by the basic rules here, and images where this method was used will be disqualified. That was the case with your image.

If you have any more questions, please address them privately to SC or openly in a separate new thread - this thread is for scores.

Awww, I was hangin in there to see what my score would look like before I got DQ'd :P It had leveled off at a 6.9!
Shame that I'm retarded and did that same duplicate layer for blur with dropped opacity... Oh well, at least I know I'm getting better! Woo 6.9 lol.
