So I went to a local antique store/flea mall to buy an old bounce flash, a pc cord, and a Vivitar SL-2 hotshoe slave adpater.

So things are great and he asks me if I am looking for anything else possibly in the future because he might could get it for me. I say, uh yea, I am saving up for either the Canon 17-40 f/4 L or the Canon 10-22mm lens. He says, okay well, I am going to a photog convention in Huntsville soon and I can usually pick the 17-40 f/4L up from anywhere between $200-250 bucks at this convention, and I can come home and sell it to you for like 350 bucks. I was like... uh really? because I haven't seen that lens for under $550 being sold privately. He insisted that he could still get it at that low price.

So, what I am asking you guys... can lenses to vendors/store owners really be had for that low? Should I trust that guy? He seems knowledgeable about the lenses I was looking for, so I assumed he knew I was talking about a high-end lens.

Thanks for you time,
-Josh

I regularly see the 17-40 lens on Craigslist for under $500, but never that low. I can't imagine why anyone would sell that lens at that price unless it has some problems with its quality or pedigree. I always follow the "if it seems to good to be true" rule and it seems to work pretty well.

It's possible that it could be gray market too...but i would suspect other issues as even that price is low for gray market.
