is contrast masking the same as the shadows/highlights feature under adjustments in PS. Looks like it to me, but i can be sure. I was trying to use contrast masking the way bear_music does but for some reason i cant do the control-alt-tilda on my imac. i know command is control on the macs, so i dont know what else is going on? Any thoughts!!

I don't know if they're the same, but I believe that what you're trying to do with that key combination is select all the highlights in your image. To do this, go to Select -> Color Range -> Highlights (from pulldown menu). Let me know if that's not what you're trying to do.

Try command-option-1 to get the highlights; shift-command-j gets you a new layer with the highlights; shift-command-i inverts.
