I enhanced the shadows in the RAW version before cropping in PSCS. This lens is SHARP.
My first "L" but not my last.

Beautiful little girl, would love to see without such a large border and that thing in her mouth. The photo is well composed and exposed. |

Hi kevin.
I don't mind the 'nuk-nuk' but the border is large for her size. I think the shot has a bit of a yellow hue and the light top she has on is pale. Maybe if she was dressed in something more colorful or in-front of a contrasting background? Just my thoughts.
P.S. something to bring out the gorgeous blue eyes. :)

Yeah, this was just one of those "Hey, I got this lens outta the box just now and I want to take a shot of something" kinda shot. I wasn't going for anything artistically valuable. I was just testing it. The only reason I added the border to the image was because the image was so light. I'll definitely be posting more of her (or perhaps more seasoned models) over the coming months. I'm just happy to get my first "L" lens and get a shot with this level of sharpness right outta the camera.
Got the lens because after a 9 months with a business license and getting pretty good at outdoor portraiture I'm ready to start moving indoors and shooting weddings or events and earning some money to offset those thousand and fifteen hundred dollar lenses. If the $1650 70-200 f/2.8L IS USM lens provides as much sharpness and color quality throughout an image as this does then I may not buy another lens until I can afford one of those. After shooting a decent 70-300 lens and having to use USM all the time and needing to play with parts of the image to get a decently defined image I am just happy to put a piece of glass on the camera and be amazed at the clarity. My wife always reviews all the shots I get on a photoshoot (we have different tastes but I really value her input and comments) so she's got several thousand photos from this camera and the softer lenses to compare with and as soon as she saw this shot she went nuts. Even to her "untrained" eye (her words) she could see the difference in quality immediately.
I'm just dying to get a model in front of the lens and see what we can put together. I have a paid shoot coming up in just a couple of weeks that'll be perfect for this (can't post the images, tho, as I'm signing over rights to the producer). I'll try to get some better composed shots soon enough, though.
Thanks for the comments.

The 70-200/2.8L IS will blow you away. It will even outperform your 17-40 in terms of sharpness and contrast. It is one of Canon's finest zoom lenses.
Here is a sample candid shot I took of my neice on the 4th of July with the 70-200/2.8L IS. Direct from my 10D; just resized 50%. 1/125 shutter, f/4, ISO 100, 145mm (232mm in 35mm equivalent). And this was hand-held (IS rocks!)
Another reason to buy L glass: you don't have to baby them. :-) This was a quick grab-shot of the Detroit Free Press staff photographer's camera at a Detroit Tiger game I went to in August. Taken handheld with the 70-200/2.8L IS at f/4 at full zoom (200mm/320mm 35mm equiv) from the stands. The photographer was in the dug-out.
(I've personally seen a 300mm/4L IS dropped 3ft onto solid concrete without any damage whatsoever. Not that I'd recommend doing that. I was horrified when I saw it happen, but relieved when the guy stuck it on his camera and it was fine!)

Eddy,
Thanks for posting those; they are incredible! Yep. I'll try to make some $$$ with this one so that I can buy one of those hosses.
