Maybe you could use the weather-resistant seals around the battery and CF card doors? |
To be completely honest with you, the only thing out of that list that I feel I'm missing out on is the Digic3. I feel I've missed a shot once in the year and a half I've had the rebel due to a slow burst rate. I'm typically shooting in good light and have gone to ISO1600 only a handful of times. 1/8000th shutter speed? I hardly ever go to 1/2000th. The weather resistance would be great to have, but I personally don't think I'd ever really test it out.
As for the camera shutting down when you open the door...yes it's annoying, but I've gotten used to waiting for that little red light to go off before I open the door. It is about time they implemented that feature though.
Really, the only thing that would push me to go to the 20/30/40D line at this point would be the focus performance. That's really the only place I feel my Rebel is lacking.
This is just my own personal experience though and of course just my opinion as well, I don't mean to come across as a jerk about it. The OP is a significantly better photographer than I am, maybe it is time for him to upgrade but I am a huge believer in the glass before body idea.

Mmm... The 40D has a few features i like: 6.5 Fps, has LiveView, has an on-board flash when i need it, uses EF AND EF-S lenses, Large LCD, managable file sizes, good price. The 5D has none of these... And most of all, upgrading from a 350D, as i did, probably means you're not a professional, and so i don't really believe you should go for the 5D. |

SamDoe, the focus performance of the 40D is vastly superior to the 350D. That is why I love my 40D. (Among other amazing features like ralton listed.) |

I don't get this statement. If you're out shooting, why would somebody be opening the door anyway? Is somebody so impatient that they shoot a burst of shots or do a long exposure and then open the door before the camera is done writing to the card?

What are the main advantages the 5 d would have over the 40, especially when it comes down to the above fields that I want to narrow my focus too? Higher FPS and Megapixels, but maybe you guys can give some first hand experience that may help. Price is not going to kill me for the 5 d, I am just trying to justify the difference. |

the 5d is 12.8mp, i think the 40d is the same as the XTI at 10.1.
I've used a 5d and I do like it- it has great white balance on auto and the full frame is nice for landscapes and stuff but it has 3 fps and a digic 2 processor so the noise handling ability and auto-focus is (as far as I can tell) almost exactly as it is on my XTI. Fair enough, the extra 2 mp would squeeze a little more out of your lenses and the body is built like a tank but I think the 40d sounds like a much better deal at the price and with the features it has (dust removal for example).
But it's up to you. I'd see if I could get both cameras and use the highest ISO available, zoom in at 300% and really check the noise levels to see what you think. But if you're shooting sports, the 6.5 fps would be very very helpful.
