Here is what I know.
My new home studio is 24' X 36'. I have 2 AB400's and the few times that I have used them I have never used them over 1/2 power. One has the softbox and the other is the slave. I have one transmitter and one receiver. I have never had any issues with one picking up the other. I have also used my ST-E2 as the transmitter to my 430EX flash and with both Alien Bees on slave and everything worked fine.

What wattage bulb should you use for Continuous light? What I have isn't bright enough but don't know what to get? |

i know it's too late, but i'll go ahead and say:
i hope you got black because i think pink lights, as happenin' as they might be, don't look as professional. if you have to take this setup on the road, you don't want to look like you're bringing your Barbie Photo Studio with you. :)
and, i think you've got a great setup. i have 2 800s and i think that my 3rd light might be a 400 for just the reasons people describe. i would also like a less-intense background light on occasion.
good luck!

I know it's after the fact, but my original kit was two 800s and a 400. I found the 400 to be under powered if using modifiers such as softboxes or honeycomb grids (which I use a lot). The 400 does work well as a straight backlight. I just got another AB but I went for the 1600.
You'll like the package, but if you're like me, you'll find you are just starting. Next you'll want the honeycombs, the barn doors, the ringlight, the vagabond....... welcome to Brokesville. ;)

Did you hit the button yet? (Edit: Now I see it up there)
I have 2 AB400s and have not raised above 1/2 power yet. No softbox, but I'm using a shoot through umbrella.

nooooooooo, you shouldnt have bought the lights, you couldve just moved to iceland, near larus, where the lighting becomes perfect when he
half clicks, either that or its just always perfect,
anyways, congrats on the purchase hope you like them, best of luck,

to quote from my lighting instructor "it's marketing"
and from photo.net "Watts measure electrical consumption of the light source. Lumens and/or joules are units of light measurement"
most flashes are not sold by the proper meas. but the amount of power they use /&their efficiency of input power
..marketing..
actual light output .. welllll .. YMMV usually consistent in brand but not across brands
edit: one lonely green ab400

The black that you purchased should also have a higher resale value than pink, so I guess that was a good choice.
