| My husband whats to buy me a lighting kit, and I don't know much about it. We plan on spending under $1,000. on it. Anyone with a suggestion on what to buy? |

A decent starter kit will include at least two 160 watt second strobes. Those could be Alien Bee 400s or other quality strobes.
I often recommend Impact strobes, as they are considerably less expensive than the Alien Bees, yet quality equipment.
With your budget, this kit will satisfy you for a while:
Impact Portrait Lighting Kit
It has two 160 w/s strobes and 1 300 watt second strobe.
Two 160 w/s strobes only
You'll also want to pick up a flash meter. And either radio slaves or a hotshoe to PC adapter to hook them to your camera.

You should check out AlienBees. You could get a nice start for less than $1000. There are some brands that are a little cheaper, but ABs are the best 'bang for the buck' that I could find. They provide excellent customer service too, which can be a big plus if you ever run into a problem.

I'll toss in my AlienBee vote as well. I would love to have some slick high-end strobes, but those are many thousands of dollars. AlienBees are great lights at a great price.

If you are going for flash for the buck, the Excalibur SP line is better than the Alien Bees. For under the $1000 you can get two SP-3200's (320 watt second lights), very good air cushion light stands, 2 45" umbrellas and a Sekonic 358 flash meter. You can probably squeeze in a softbox, barn doors, beauty reflector, a baby sitter and dinner. :D
You can check out the Excalibur kits on B&H... just do a search on Excalibur. Their softboxes and other accessories are under SP Photo.
If you are partial to bright colors, then the Bees are not a bad choice.

| I'll second the Excaliburs. When I researched lighting it came down to the Excalibur 3200 kit and the AlienBees but the Excaliburs won out because it allowed me to also get a new lens. I think you would be happy with either kit. |
