While looking at the comments on my challenge entry, I was thinking about the checkbox to indicate if a comment is helpful. A better idea would be "radio buttons" with 4 choices like this:

* - Not helpful * - Somewhat Helpful
* - Helpful * - Very Helpful

That way the comment ratings would be more accurate and also give feedback to the commentor as well to maybe improve their comments. Then on user profiles, the new comment rating would reflect an average of the possible values (1 through 4, with 4 being Very Helpful). Example display on profile:

Comments: 234
Comment rating: 3.5 (Very Helpful)

The calculation would round to the nearest 1/10th, so for example a true value of 3.452 would be displayed as "3.5", and then the displayed 3.5 value would be rounded to the nearest whole number (4 in this example) giving the "Very Helpful" description in this case.

All existing user comment ratings would need to be converted like this: All helpful comments the user currently has give 4 points for each one, and 1 point for each unhelpful. Or you could go 3 for helpful and 2 for unhelpful. In addition, this idea would also remove the problem of the current comment rating system by removing stats that make your comments appear to be unhelpful when the person just didn't mark ANY of their comments at all, since if no button was pressed no stat is recorded. :) So you kill 2 birds with one stone.

Just an idea... I don't remember seeing this suggestion before but I may have just missed it. What do you think?

Do we really want to get into voting on comments too?

good idea, but as far as efficiency goes, probably not to realistic, but a good idea though

Cbeller, Personally I would like to be able to rate comments a little better. It would be for people who follow how their challenge entry is doing, and give them a little more fun in doing that. If you don't want to rate the comments you recieve, just don't do it. With this idea, not rating comments wouldn't effect the commentor's "rating" so it wouldn't be a problem if you don't want to rate your comments. Currently it IS a problem because if you don't rate your comments they appear in your profile as Unhelpful.

Goingskiing, I'm not sure about the effeciency. It would add more calcs to your profile, but that shouldn't be a problem. And when you "save" your comment screen it would need to save a few more numeric variables, not a big deal either. It's not a problem since hits on the Profile page and saving data when changes are made to your challenge "comments screen" aren't very common when compared to the number of hits on other pages.

yeah, that's probably true, actually, after thinking about it, it might add more comments to a challenge, like, people may have more initiative I guess, actually may be a really good idea, actually one of the better suggestions i have heard on this site
