I was amazed at the difference in the before and after of this picture:

I decided to see if I could learn how to edit an image like that.
I downloaded both the original and his edited version. Opened both of them in Paint Shop Pro 7, tiled vertically. Then I attempted to adjust the original myself until it matched his edited version. After trying a few different things I found that the following produced almost the same results as rcrawford edited version.
1. I adjusted the histogram first lowering the high point until a percentage of pixels registered.
2. Increased the low point until a percentage of pixels registered.
3. Lowered the gama to darken the image.
4. Expanded the mid-tones to increase the contrast and bring out the clouds and the highlights on the tree.
5. Used Enhance Photo - Automatic Color Saturation. Set it at More Colorful/Strong. Applied it twice
6. Adjusted Levels and decreased Red
7. Adjusted brightness and contrast
Result - Very close to rcrawfords picture! It was a very educational exercise! Tried some new tools I haven't used before. For those like me who aren't experts in photo editing you might want to try it yourself too!
I am working on 'Chairmen of the Board' now. Need to figure out how to change the color of the eyes! ; )
rcrawford, crabappl3, Thanks for posting your originals!

Mask the eye
Copy the eye
Paste the eye
On the new eye layer adjust hue/sat of the eye
Clone/Healing brush the Catchlight down
Smudge tool to remove the noise in the eye and give it a smooth glass look
Done!
:-)

Thanks! I'll try it! Any tips on cloning out the fence. You did an excellent job, couldn't see any traces or blurs in the feathers where you removed it. Is it just a tedious job or is there an easier way. |
