Sparkling blue lakes, cascading waterfalls, deep gorges, and stunning lakeside vineyards, all framed against Upstate NY's renowned fall foliage. If this sounds interesting to you, please consider joining us for our annual Finger Lakes Fall GTG.
I'm thinking about trying to make this a full weekend event for those that are interested. I may have some extra room to put out-of-towners up if there is interest, so please let me know. At the moment, I have a vacant 2-bedroom apartment over my garage, plus several vacant sofas if that has any appeal.
Update: It looks like 10/13-10/14 is the best bet for most of us.
Possible Participants:
eqsite - that's me :)
vikas
OdysseyF22 - Sunday only
Neuferland
bs-photos - maybe?
dsterner
ButterflySis - maybe Sunday
atsxus
robs
nickp37 - Sunday
tenfrozentoes
davidx76 - Saturday
I'm open to agenda ideas, but here is a thought of how it could go:
Saturday
6:00 am - Early departure from Ithaca to get the best morning light on the East shore of Seneca Lake. Drive down Route 414, stopping at the many wineries to shoot the vineyards in the morning light.
10:00 am - Hike Watkins Glen, one of the most photogenic gorges in the area.
1:00 pm - Lunch somewhere in Watkins Glen.
3:00 pm - Havana Glen - another one of the area's beautiful waterfalls.
4:00 pm - Drive back up Route 414, again stopping at the wineries - this time sampling as we go -- and yes, I can be a designated driver for this. This is peak wine tasting season, so it might be crowded, but it will definitely be a good time.
6:00 pm - Sunset somewhere on or overlooking Seneca Lake.
8:00 pm - Dinner. I'm happy to host for this. We could do BBQ, pizza, or something more fancy -- or we could just eat out.
Sunday
6:30 am - Early risers meet at my place just outside of Ithaca for a sunrise shoot at the horse farm. Our new farm is up on Ithaca's West Hill and gets wonderful morning light as the sun rises across the valley. I will happily provide coffee, tea and bagels.
8:00 am - Head over to Taughannock Falls - the highest single-stage waterfall east of the Mississippi.
11:00 am - Hike up lower Buttermilk Falls
1:00 pm - Lunch somewhere in Ithaca.
3:00 pm - Hike the counter-clockwise loop of Upper Treman State park, my favorite of all the gorges.
6:00 pm - For those who choose to stick around, we can do sunset in Stewart Park at the southern end of Cayuga Lake.
As for dates, I'm open to suggestions, but I was thinking about either the weekend of 10/13-10/14 or the weekend of 10/20-10/21.
If anyone is interested, please speak up hear. None of this is set in stone, and suggestions are very much welcome. I hope we can get a good turnout.

Sounds wonderful.. if it's the weekend of Oct 13/14 count me in! I am busy Oct 20th (Saturday) but will be able to join for the rest of the weekend.
I can also offer a place to crash, don't have a huge apartment, but my 1 bedroom apartment has an extra futon bed in the living room and some more room on the floor for one person to spread out a sleeping bag - for people who don't mind being cramped up in a place with two to three photographers :)

Ooh, a few days ago, my wife brought in an article on Ithaca and really wants to visit this fall. We have Sundays and Mondays off for weekends, but I might be able to join you guys on whichever Sunday you choose.

I hope you can join us. If not, I'll be happy to offer any travel advice for the Ithaca area for when you do make it up here. |

I'll skip it this year. Why???
Two years ago on my drive to GTG heater in my car stopped working.
Last year on the way back cruise control died.
No thanks. Enjoy without me.

Count me in! The weekend of the 13/14th sounds like the better choice to me as well, but I could probably do the other one if needed. It looks like a great plan, and we'll all certainly get our exercise - and no doubt a ton of great photos.

I'd come depending on the dates. But my availability is unfortunately vey limited. I wouldn't be able to come the weekend of the Oct 14th, and probably not the 20th either. |

What dates would work for you? As I said in the OP, nothing is set in stone at this point. |

I will see if my wife wants to do a long weekend once we have some idea on dates. I will ask her if she can get the time off and hopefully Once we know the dates, see if we can make an appearance as well.

Definitely interested! My mom & I just went to Taughannock Falls this past weekend!! There wasn't much water, but still some nice sights. Of course we also took part in some wine tasting.
Will definitely keep an eye on this thread!

Hey, Deannda. I didn't realize you were still around these parts. I'd like to make a decision on dates before this weekend. I hope you can make it. |

This is just over 3 hours from me so I am definitely watching this thread. The 13th & 14th look good for me as does the following weekend. How about a heads up on a B&B or those offers to crash? I want to be among the early risers. I also like the itinerary.

As of right now either weekend I think would work. Me & a couple friends of mine had talked about going up to the wineries the 13th & 14th but no definite plans.

Gary, 13th would be best for me as well. I have already made plans for the 14th to shoot at Montezuma. May be able to change that though. Weekend of the 6th is out and the 20/21 is out because of the NYC Photo Expo. The 27th is out because our office is moving... So basically, the 13th is the only good day for me, but don't plan around that.
Good agenda. May want to add Shequaga near Havana Glen if anyone is interested. I don't care either way.
Btw, been meaning to email you...so glad you wrote. The baby's adorable and getting so big. :)

Hi Jen! So glad you responded. So far it's looking like the 13/14 is winning -- it's probably the better weekend for me as well. We're going to need a guide on the Seneca Lake side of things, so I do hope you can make it. |

Yep, still around, just not as active because I got a full time job, which is great for the money but sucks for the photography, LOL :)
