I bought an old flash from a flea market, its the Focal M500C-Zoom bounce flash.

I wanted to experiment with a bounce flash before I splurge on a speedlight or equivalent.

But I was just reading strobist and they were talking about an old Vivitar that could damage your camera.

So basically, does anyone know if using this flash on camera will damage my 20d? I've done some shots with it on camera already (dumb me) and it seems fine, but I just want to make sure.

Is there a general rule for checking this sort of stuff out?

Edit: I've done some research but its conflicting. Some say 6V for the hotshoe, and others say 250V because Canon says that's ok in their manuals for the PC Cord, and while still others say that the PC cord and the hotshoe are on the same circuit and therefore the 250V figure is correct.

But I am not certain on how much load my Focal M500C is producing.
