I need your modest help in upgrading my computer at work. It's a Dell Optiplex GX60 desktop, Celeron processor, Windows XP SP1. I'm pretty sure it has the minimum RAM (128MB) and I want to purchase a module to go in the other slot, either a 256MB or a 512MB, which will give my system a little boost in usability.
Two questions:
1) On the Mac OS, to find out about your system, there's a menu item "about this Mac" that at a glance tells you what processor is, how much RAM you have, etc. Then there's a link to run a system info app that will give you detailed info about your system. Is there a similar way in WinXP to get info on your system, even basic info like how much RAM is installed?
2) What's the best place to order RAM from? I've purchased from Memory To Go and RamJet before. Any other places people have liked??
TIA. |

| I think you check for that information under Control Panels > System. |

Right-click "My Computer" icon, choose properties.
Here's some memory for your computer from Crucial.com. |

| I've ordered from Crucial.com before with no problems. Their memory advisor tool is pretty convenient. I also like newegg.com for computer parts. |

Excellent - those are two different ways of bringing up the same dialog box, System Properties.
My Celeron is 2Ghz, and has 256 Mb of RAM, so I'm not as bad off as I thought. Is there a way to tell, other than opening the case, whether I have the open slot left? |

Edit to add: tried to run the system scanner at the Crucial.com link but our systems at work are disabled from running any ActiveX routines. We're a high school and the firewall basically blocks everything. Guess I'll have to open the case and check.
Thanks for the links and advice! |

There is a little program called Belarc that will tell you all you need to know... like slots for memory, which programs have updates pending etc. Go to the site and download the program. Neat little gadget and it is free.

Here is the third one: press windows key and pause/break key simultaneously. Probably useless information...
I bought my memory at a local Fry's, mostly because I needed it the same day. You could save some $$$ by going online, but with [cheap] memory being equivalent to minimal QC, I'd go with a local retailer where I can bring it back and ask for a new chip. I did exactly that with Fry's... they had a test machine, put the memory in it, saw it fail, and gave me a new one immediately, no questions asked. |
