Had an OS failure, so reloaded everything from scratch on a new HD. Now I'm trying to keep my C: drive as clean as possible and install everything to D:.
So I load my 30D disk and when I go to try to change the install location, it crashes the installer.
I've got a pretty big job due on Tuesday with 300+ RAW files and would like to use DPP which I'm used to.
Anyone know where I can get the Base Install program while I wait for Canon to respond, so I can install that and follow the upgrade path? |

not sure you're gonna have much luck installing apps on a non OS partition. store things that way, but the applications likely need some of the OS system files to run.
i could be wrong, but it makes sense to me.
if the OS fails you don't lose the stored data, and merely need to reinstall the applications. if you save the install.exe's on the d: partition - you won't need to donwload them all again.

Don't ask me what I think of DPP (fully covered in a recent thread), but if you really want it, you can get it here...
DPP download
Should be no problem to install onto D: with the OS on C:

| Yep, there should be no problem at all installing it on a different drive. If the drive that the OS is on crashes again, however, you'd still have to reinstall the application, since all the tie-ins to the OS are done on the drive & partition that the OS is on. |

Thanks. Actually, the problem is still there. I can download the upgrade installer, but I cannot install the root application to my d: drive. The problem is that the root application is on the disk that came with my 30D and the autoplay installer crashes when I try to change the install path (clicking the 'Browse' button). The setup installers do not use the standard InstallShield that Windows programs often use, so I cannot manually install any parts of the program suite. The downloadable portions are only updaters.
I discovered recently that there is also no way to move the Hibernate save image to another drive, so this means that I need 2.1GB free space on my c: drive that I never anticipated.
I like to run my C: drives VERY lean. I usually build XP boxes for friends with just 5 or 10GB on the C: drive as it generally works better for many aspects. Then again those are usually people who do little more than read their email and write letters on their computers, and I find that the install seldom surpasses 3GB footprint on C.
Sadly, I don't seem to have as much breathing room with my Tablet. I'm almost full with 9.7GB.
The reason I keep stuff off my C drive is that I prefer to have it free of stuff that changes regularly.
I even finally managed to figure out how to install the shared components of PS on D, so through 99% of what I do, the C drive remains at 2.37GB free. That's a bit tight for me. |

thanks.
FYI, lots of people use small C drive installations.
I have been building small C drive installs for a few years, just this time, seeing as I do more than most of the people that I know, the C drive allotment turned out a bit too small.
All I really need to do is install DPP to D drive. Don't think that is really all that complicated, it's just broken on my disk. |

It very well could be an issue with the installer they are using. A talk with Canon might be in order, to figure out whether the installer is supposed to behave that way.

2.5 hours to go before I need to deliver 500 pics sorted, edited and burned to DVD. Canon doesn't respond so quickly.
Actually just figured this one out.
Rebooted to safe mode, and tried again. Didn't work on User account. On a whim, I tried on Administrator and I was able to use the button which changes the install directory.
Stupid. Not sure if it's me that's stupid or Canon's Software packager, but still feels like some IQ points were lost here...
DPP is now installed and updating to D:\program files\Canon.
Whee!
Oh yeah, if interested, I am using a user account which currently has Administrator priveleges, but once I get the system finished, I may knock it down a bit to prevent malware issues. Point being - this user account does have administrator rights.

| Many programs will not install anywhere from a non-administrative account, but I've never seen a program refuse to install in a selected location because of lack of admin privileges. That's a new one! |

just to clarify. It wasn't even lack of admin privelege. It was lack of admin identity. very odd.
also, it wasn't a refusal to install, it was a crash of the install program.
