I would argue against having image and text on the same side. Text one side, image on the other, maybe just with the company name on the image side as well.

Just my opinion, but I don't think text on an image of a sunset is ever going to look professional.

That said, please bear in mind I have no experience, or design ability whatsoever.

Personally, I prefer one-sided cards. I pick up a lot of cards at art/craft sales, make notes on the back of what the seller offered that prompted me to save a card, other locations they'll be working, prices, etc., then file them in a card folder.
And if they don't like "fine art photographer" what about "art photographer"? To me that would differentiate between someone (like me) who would like people to buy what they choose to shoot rather than someone (like wedding/portrait photographers) who shoot what you hire them to.
(all said strictly as a consumer rather than a businessperson :) )

How about "Photographic Artist"

:)

One thing I always notice when I'm searching for a business card in my collection is that I will have identified with something on the card. In my mind I will be saying to myself 'it's got a big red something on the side', 'the card is mostly green', etc etc. It is always good to have a card that leaves something in peoples minds when they first saw it to draw them back to it when they are looking for it. That could be a beautiful sunset or something else. Just my thoughts.

Now that's an idea that might work. I'll see how it looks.

Yep! The great people of DPChallenge have come through again.

I thought that I had a great design when I finished it after 2:00 a.m. this morning. When I woke up I was very surprised to find that everybody hated the beveling and drop shadows. They gave me some good criticism and I made revision after revision after getting more feed back throughout the day, and I placed the order with VistaPrints just a moment ago.

The final version is quite different from my original which I had thought was pretty good.

Thanks everybody.

AAAAARRRGGHHHHHH!!!! I already placed the order. It seemed very automated and I don't think that I could change the order or cancel it and reorder......If I wanted to ;)

Actually, I decided not to use "Photographic Artist", with or without proper spelling (I can spell, I just have a problem typing).

I decided to go back to the version that said "Photographer" and I ordered that one instead - - -

- - - and there are no typos in this one.

Whew! That was close.

Great work man, I see a lot of photog business cards and they all seem very generic- black background, white text, 2 square images on the face and a phone number... crap.

But yours is actually colourful and i think does have a nice, warm look to it.

Nice work man. I may have to borrow your ideas ;)

Was that all done in PS btw?

Thanks a lot for the compliments on the final card, although a lot of credit has to be given to all those who commented on the previous versions and offered their suggestions. I chose the picture because it was local, it was the shot that inspired me to try selling prints and led me to DPChallenge, it represents the type of work that I will be selling, and I like it. The rest of the design is the culmination of my ideas and all the critiques that I received.

Yes, it was all done in PS CS2.

BTW, I ordered 500 cards on glossy, thicker than standard stock from VistaPrints. They talked me into adding a folding, metal card holder for an additional $5.24. With expedited shipping (5 business days) the total order came to $38.61. I think that was a pretty good price. I hope the quality is good.

After placing the order, they sent me an email offering 250 cards free. I just pay the shipping. I ended up exploring the "foil" option which is some sort of shimmering effect when you view the card from different angles. Eventually I uploaded a foil mask that will result in the effect being applied only to the water portion of the card instead of the whole thing. I am looking forward to seeing how it looks. I hope it doesn't end up looking too cheesy or gimmicky.

I've heard lots of good things about the cards from VistaPrints but lately, I've also been hearing lots of bad things about their business practices. Lots of folks who've bought from them have had additional charges appearing on their credit cards. Here's one site to check out, Google brings up more. Just a heads up to be on the lookout...

My wife has some Vistaprint cards for her massage therapy business and they came out superb. The resolution on those things is incredible, as is the colour clarity.

Thanks for the info. I have a few gigs coming up soon for a wrestling promotion so need some cards to hand around.

Good luck with the sales :)

Thanks MK, I'll look over my credit card statement carefully.
