My daughter smartypants is taking a photography class at school where they shoot film and develop themselves. She's using my old Nikkormat ftn for which I have a decent Nikon 50mm lens. I'd love to acquire a wider lens, possibly a zoom in the range of 25-75mm, or even a little wider. I'm wondering what people here recommend, since I have virtually no experience with fully manual, mechanical lenses and cameras, other than using my ftn for astronomy back in the day.
I'm also wondering, heaven forbid, if somebody here happens to have such a lens that they'd be willing to sell??

Unfortunately, the best lenses for Nikon F mount cameras are, as you would expect, primes. The difference between primes and zooms is even more pronounced in those lenses than it is now with modern AF lenses, since the newer lenses have so much more engineering into them.
There is a Nikkor 35-70 lens that is pretty good if you can find a good copy. Don't expect to find good fast zooms though, the fastest zooms made then were in the f3.5-f4 range.
Personally, I avoided zooms if at all possible, when I shot film.
The good news is that you should be able to pick up some very nice primes for relatively little money. |
