I'm considering buying the Canon EF 17-40 f/4L as a WA wedding and group portrait lens. I think I can put enough light on most subjects that I can shoot 200 indoors and come out with some good work. Anyone have this lens and know of anything I should look out for? I noticed on another forum site that this lens can exhibit very small amounts of CA wide open.

I'd love to hear your evaluations of it.

To complement it I have the EF 50 f/1.8 and Quantaray 70-300 f/4-5.6 (which I'd love to replace with that Canon EF 70-200 f/2.8L IS).

I'm thinking about making the purchase this weekend so any helpful advice or comments you can share will be considered and appreciated.

I don't know if non-members (membership is free) can check the reviews section at //www.fredmiranda.com, but here is a direct link to the fm user reviews for the 17-40 F4 L:

FM 17-40L user reviews

Lot of user info there about all kind of lenses.

Yeah, I'd already read that set of reviews. I think its clear from what I saw there that the 17-40 is a much better price/value than the 16-35. I was just wondering about anyone else's personal experience.

Ok,

Here is an Luminous Landscapes 16-35 vs 17-40 test.

The reason why I cough up these links is because I have looked at both and more for my own purchase decision. :)
Not that I'd consinder the 16-35, way too expensive, but especially the Sigma 15-30 vs the Canon 17-40. I am going for the Canon. (+ 50 1.4 + 70-200 4).

Of course always interested in dpc opinions. I think we should get our own gear review section. :)

i mentioned the gear review thing in another thread, and some others thought it was a good idea.

i cant find it now though...
but i think its a great idea...

EDIT: and speaking of not being able to find it - it would also be nice to be able to receive emails when someone replies to a thread you have posted to. then it doest send another until you go back to that thread...

i have it and i really like it. i'm into the wide angle perspective tho, and want to go even wider. as far as this lens goes, i dont use it very much for portraits (i'll probably go with the 28-135 for that) unless i want a bit of skewed perspective (which i like)
such as in this shoot i did for an electric sunglasses ad--

but then again, i haven't used it for much "normal" stuff
so i probably don't have the best advice. but i can say this--if i had it to do over, id probably go wider like maybe 15-30, or even 12-24 and get the 28-135--and just skip this lens altogther. but that's just me! :)

I have it and like it a lot.

Very robust construction, 77mm filter ( You almost cannot use filter on the sigma 15-30. I had the 15-30 in hand and did not like it at all. Although the 17-40L is more expensive .. I choose for the long term.

The 15-30 is more bulky ( You cannot remove the hood on the sigma). What I like on the 17-40 is that I can remove it (for transport) and that I do not have to always use the hood ( when I want to me more 'discret' .. in that case I am more carefull with the flare light direction ).

For some reason the 10D with the 17-40 has been in the water a few seconds in Venice and came out of the water fine ( with a filter it is sort of water-sealed ) which I did appreciate a lot.

If potentially you can aford the extra cost .. do not have both the sigma 15-30 and the canon 17-40L .. I am afraid it will be a no brainer for the 17-40L :-)

My 2 cents, although people are happy with both.
