I am deciding whether to use the Highlight Tone Priority (HTP) setting on my brand-spanking new EOS 40D. I know HTP was also introduced in the EOS 1D Mark series, so hopefully some of you are experts on this.

I understand what the results are that this feature is attempting to create, but I would like to know the technical details on how it accomplishes this.

Also, what are the "rules-of-thumb" on when I should use it and when I should not use it?

Thanks!

I have HTP on when shooting brides in white dresses. And off the rest of the time. To be honest, I haven't taken the time to figure out if it's really buying me anything. But I'm assuming having HTP on should get me additional detail in the white dress...

I works and works well.
My first true test? I shot a sign in the lobby of the reception hall -one of those black ones with the white letters. Shot 1 the letter blinked on teh LCD - as expected they're overexposed. I turn on the highlight priority and take another shot, changing nothing else. No blinkies!

The wedding dress was 'butterscotch' (some off white shade of white) and the HTP made it look soooo nice and creamy - I'm sold!

Beware the HUGE files though.

And BTW, ISO3200 is printable as-is, but be careful with USM. I did an 8x10 from last weekend to see.

This is ISO 800!
