I am considering buying the Canon Speedlite 430EX Flash for EOS... I am aware of the Canon Speedlite 580EX Flash...but I don't think I am ready to dive that far in yet...
To be honest I am not experienced at all with flashes but after reading reviews this looked like a good one to start my learning with...
What do you all think? Any accessories you would suggest with it? |

A good accessory would be the 580EX, or visa-versa... But that is long-term thinking. The great thing about getting into lighting is that you can accessorise incrementally, getting:
- a difusser (omibounce, lightsphere, etc)
- off-the-camera cord
- umbreallas
- light stands
- remote flash triggers
- etc.. |

I just got a 2nd hand 550EX for about the same price as a 2nd hand 430EX. I also got the ebay wireless remote trigger with it.
I'll second PaulE's list of accessories, and add in some colour gels. I haven't had a chance to play much with the colour gels yet, but hopefully soon. Wireless trigger is lots of fun, but so far takes more time to setup - no good for anything candid unless you can predict the action. For candids, ETTL bounce flash, with some sort of fill-in reflector (80/20) seems to be the most convenient way to get good results.
A big white or silver reflector is also handy if you don't already have one. It turns a 1-flash kit into a 2-light portrait set, because the reflector can be the fill light.
And yes, I'm agreeing with the incremental purchasing method. As you buy each new bit, you learn to use it. It's no good buying everything at once if you don't have the experience to know how to use it properly. That's what I finding anyway. :)
