My birthday is coming up, and people are going to want to know what I want for that, and I'm thinking my standard-issue answer this year is going to be filters. I know I definitely want a polarizer and an ND. However, with the Coolpix, the filters all sat behind the lenses, whereas in DSLR-land, they go on the front, which leaves me nearly clueless about what I actually need.

I've got:
Tokina 12-24
Nikon 18-135
50mm (so that one is at least fairly obvious, right?)

Help me out here? What would you recommend, what would work, etc?

I think you're confusing focal length with thread size for the filter.

If you look at the front of each lens, around the edge there will be a number. Also, inside the lens cap will be this same number. This is the thread size for the filter.

If each lens is a different size, to save some money, get the filters for the largest lens and stepup rings for the others.

Aha, light bulb goes on!

And that had me wondering what size the old Coolpix filters were and if they happened to match up with any of my current lenses, and lo and behold, the filters and the 50mm lens are both 52mm, yay! So I have that one covered with a polarizer! WOOT!!!!

Ask for a set of Cokin filters to fit your largest lens and then just get a bunch of step down rings.
BTW, the step down rings fit into the filter holder.

Huh?

For the Cokin filters you need an adapter ring for each lens size and 1 holder for all the filters. For an SLR, the P size filters (at least) are what you need. You don't need stepup or stepdown rings.

The Cokin setup is good for graduated ND filters.
