is this camera any good? and what is a "fair" price? Would this be better than the 400D XTI? I'm really curious but nobody, other than 1 person has bothered to answer.

"better than the 400XTi" is a subjective thing indeed.

I would say that you would probably be just as happy with the current rebel as you would be with the 1D. There are a few differences, but on the other hand, Canon has made some pretty good advances in other areas with the Rebel.

What is important to you as a camera?

I'd guess that the 1D could still blow the pants off the 400XTI for autofocus performance... Might be hard pressed to find a lot of other major differences that matter.

would rather have the 1D MII or even a 20D/30D for that matter, but can't hardly find one available at a good price.

What's a 'good price'?
I got a 20D used 18 months ago with 4k clicks on it for $550. I've seen one for $450 not too long ago.
I've seen a couple of 1Ds mk 2 for $5000.
You can probably get a 1D mk2n for $3000 if you look around.
I've NOT seen any 5Ds for under $2100 though.
New 30Ds are under $1000 right now.

The older 1D models are good, but less MP and the noise isn't as low at high ISO's as current bodies.

You need to be ready with cash and keep looking EVERYDAY. Bargains go fast - check the buy and sell forums at fredmiranda.com and not sure if you have to be a member or not (i am so I can of course get in) to //www.prophotohome.com/ - I see 1D bodies here often, and cheap. There is a 1Ds for $2275 right now, and a 1Ds mk2 for $5k with 3 batts, 2 1D nmk3 bodies and a 5D w/ 24-105 ($3100).

What's a 'good price' mean to you?

They're completely different cameras, for different purposes... if you're shooting well-lit (or artificially lit) sports, the 1D is a great tool for the job. The AF is a lot better, it's sealed, faster motor drive, physically bigger sensor, etc.

And it can sync at 1/2000th if you need it to.

Are you referring to flash sync? Flash sync on the original 1D is 1/500, the MKII/MKIIn is 1/250, and the MKIII is 1/300.

ETA over at FM 1DMKII are going in the area of $2k, 5D's used are going from $2200 down to $1900, and arent lasting long. I bought my 1DMKIIn recently for $2750 from there.

The official sync speed is 1/500th, but after a certain point (I think it's 1/200th or so) it switches the CCD on and off rather than actually timing it. That means that there's no focal plane shutter moving across the sensor to black out part of the frame, so you can basically sync up to whatever speed your radios, cables and flashes will do. For me, that's about 1/2000th, which is a full 2-stop push so I'm happy with that.

Of course with a TTL flash, it limits to 1/500th.
