I already feel like an idiot for asking this, but I'm getting irrationally annoyed about it and google hasn't been any help. :)
I'm trying to plug the wein peanut directly into my Vivitar 283 and can't seem to plug the thing more than halfway into the flash. Is a big part of the plug itself really supposed to be hanging out? I was under the impression that the peanut plugged all the way into the flash.
Has anyone else had this sort of problem? Is there some mysterious technique that I'm not aware of? All of the issues people seem to have with the peanuts involve flashes not firing, and here I can't even plug the darn thing in. Any help would be greatly appreciated! |

It's a common problem. Apparently, you can use a screwdriver to open it up a little. I have one with the same problem, but I've been busy with other stuff, so I haven't tried this yet.
Try this at your own risk, of course.... |

It doesn't go as far in as you would think. Look at the jack you can see the metal contact part just under the surface so it won't go in very far. Of course the important part is does it work? BTW I've never had one fall out.
One of my 283s has a broken foot (common problem) and noticed that on ebay you can get a metal foot with a built-in slave & 1/4-20 socket for less than a new peanut slave. I might give one of those a try.

I used a broken off q-tip to measure how far that plate is from the outside of the flash and it looks as though no part of the plug should be sticking out/it should be flush against the side of the flash...
It doesn't work as it is (half plugged in), it looks as though the tip of the plug is getting caught on the litte bit of wire that cuts across the top of the outlet halfway between the outside of the flash and the metal plate on the inside.
I might have to go look into that ebay option as taking a screwdriver to the flash is a bit intimidating. I still feel as though this ought to just plug in though. :/
Thanks for the suggestions- I'd love to hear how the screwdriver idea pans out if you end up trying it. |
