They aren't for me...they are for my wife. She loves doing photography but doesn't think she has much talent and I think being her husband she might think I'm just telling her stuff to make her happy...which I'm not.

Recently a group of women from our church have started their own band called Great Shoes. They asked my wife and her best friend (also a great photographer that has NO clue) to take pics for them. I have them posted here: Great Shoes and was wondering if anyone could find a bit of time to give some comments. I really feel with some minor changes a few of these could work for CD covers...but what do I know, I've never made it scored here higher than 6.13 lol.

We are both pretty much self taught other than the stuff I read and learn at this wonderful family (DPC). She loves b/w and sephia toned images and I am working on getting her to not shoot in this mode but she doesn't have a lot of patients for the post processing and since I'm not near by to help, she goes the easy route...not always a bad thing. Also since we've never lived in the same time zone let alone house for more than a weekend I haven't gotten to show her tricks like reflectors or diffusers so there are lighting issues that we will be working out real soon. Other than that I was just wondering if anyone has more tips for her...you know from an unbiased source.

Thanks in advance.

Hopefully this won't be taken as caustic, abrupt and the other adjectives that tend to follow my posts...

None of them are CD cover material (or poster, brochure, etc). Lot of exposure and composition issues. How much of that could be rectified with more time in post, I don't know.

Great Shoes - seems like it would be shooting fish in a barrel to come up with a good cover shot.

Sorry. Maybe if you post the ones you think could cut it then I could see something I'm missing at first glance.

thanks for taking the time to look...I know about the exposure problems, I guess it was more layout that I was looking at, not really sure now.

The one I thought I could see on a cover was this one , again I know it has it's issues that I am hoping to help her with but as far as layout I think she is doing rather well.

I guess you need to keep in mind that CD covers are square, so unless you are going box that out by adding a top banner or something, it won't really do the trick.

Newbie opinion,...
With a little work on the shadows areas, I think they are good pics.
I think this one is most suited as a CD jacket:

I like this one as well, but I don't know if it would work as an album cover:

Im not convinced they would work as a cd cover... well they would to the extent that they would fit in the box, but if I saw it on the shelf i would walk right by it because it looks outdated to me. This is ONLY on the basis of it being a cd cover, not its artistic merit.

When i think cd covers i want to see colour and something out of the ordinary that sums up what the album is about, and very rarely have i seen a decent album cover that is a group shot... the only one i can think is one of Extreme's albums back in the early 1990s.

For examples of what i mean check out Clearing the Channel by Sinch or Progress by Ultraspank... both very different to what you posted by the way, but its a completely different genre.

As a suggestion, some candid shots on a street always seem to work. Or a good idea a friend of mine did was line up the band on a bench and take a shot straight on. Or line them up against one of those police height board things... the options are limitless.

For albums of new bands, you need a minimalistic approach. Something that looks simple and professional. I wouldn't put a single face on a CD cover to start. Chances are the CDs won't even be in stores but they will be sold at shows. Use something simple and eye catching, nothing too deep.

Once you are famous you can put anything you want on teh album cover.

Since the band name is 'Great Shoes' why not put a picture of just the bottom half of everyone's legs showing off 'great shoes'. Just a thought.

Oh yeah Joey has some totaly cool stuff. I'm gonna have to show her those, although she has no patients for PP so maybe she can shoot them and I can process...who am I kidding I can't even get close to his awesomeness. lol

Thanks again.
