Okay.....right up front-windy and sappy, so exit now if you're not up for it!
I have to tell you, only with a community such as this can an award for mediocrity warm your heart and make you take stock of your life and make you realize that a bunch of crazies with cameras are an important part of the happiness that you can find in life.
I've laid a few eggs, been aggravated at some poor scores, infuriated at some narrow-minded numbskulls in the forums, but.....
My life has been enriched beyond belief and my eyes have been opened in ways unimagineable without the good people and their imagery of their world that they want, and need, to give to the world.
There are some stone phenomenal photographers here.....both in terms of picture quality, and more importantly, in terms of compassion, understanding, and just all 'round beauty of the soul. And these people have shown me their love of their craft as well as their world and the people that they love with their work.
This is what has made a photographer out of me. I took pictures for years, but it wasn't intil I got here a little over a year ago that I became a photographer in the true sense of the word. I can convey what I see and feel though my camera now in ways that I wasn't even aware of a year ago. I have the skills and ability, and some experience now, to be able to express myself through photography.
In ways as simple as learning how to work the buttons on my camera (Thanks cutlassdude70) to the understanding that it isn't all necessarily about the scores (Thanks Team Suck) to just the general day to day exchanges on the forums to see what we're all doing in various parts of the world.
And so, I give my most humble thanks to all of you, and there are many, who have helped to shape this photographer into someone who hopefully will leave behind a legacy permanently preserved and enhanced by what I've learned through the you all here at DP Challenge.
Oh.....what brought this on?
I won the BORING MEDIOCRE side challenge and got this absolutely GORGEOUS award for being a regular, ordinary person with a camera.
I am honored!

Jackson....that was truly from the heart. But what you speak of is so real to so many on here. We come from different parts of the world...different lifestyles...different backgrounds...different futures...but we all have the same passion and tools to showcase the desire within.
There are people of all different talents and styles on here. I get PM'ed so many times on a daily basis from members on here. And they all ask the same types of questions...including...'Why do I score so badly?' 'Why doesn't anyone like my image?' 'Why can't I get high scores?'....and so on.
I say to them all....you have your own style...DPC is just a client...if you want to score highly...then meet the needs of that client. If you want to learn...then listen...and try what they say...but don't rule out your own ideas.
If you call yourself an expert...then you will stop learning....! Don't ever stop learning...but don't be afraid to teach others. That is how you got where you are now.
And just as you now have the laughing cockatoo on your bio page, Jackson...let that represent the fun and laughter you gain from this site...and in doing so...look at the knowledge you take with you.
This post,in general, is not aimed at you Jackson...but to the entire DPC community.
Now I had better get back to work.
Cheers
J

I don't think I could have said it much better than Judi. :D First off, thank you Jeb for the name-drop. :) I'm glad I was able to help you out with some of the nitty-gritty technical details. It wasn't tough since you were so eager to learn. ;) Team Suck has also been an awesome group of people for you to have started with. But when it really comes down to it, it's your passion for the art and your willingness to learn something challenging that has brought you so far.
That's one of the really great things about photography - it can be a PERFECT medium for people to express their thoughts and emotions. While photography can seem a bit tied up in all the technical details at first, the true art in it starts to emerge once you become comfortable with your camera. It's easy to get wrapped up in wanting high scores and comparing yourself with others, but it's when people take photos for the love of taking photos that the magic of a place like DPC comes through. There are very few places I've come across where there are as many kind and supportive people as DPC.
For anyone just starting out on the site, keep up with it! Don't let little frustrations get to you, and just make use of the awesome network of people on here to get past those hurdles. :) And congrats on the award, Jeb! |

Jackson, I admire YOU so much, and that is why you are one of my favorites.
Like you, and many others, we are photographers, because we choose to be, and we are not all professionials, but LOVE what we do. We learn from our mistakes. Sometimes, I forget, and need to remember my faults more often.
This DPC site has really made me a much better person, but sometimes a little frustrated as well, as that is part of the learning process, we all share here at DPC.
I also think "Team Suck" has also played a huge part of my love of DPC. Many. many people, stand out here at DPC that I admire, and appriciate for there kindness and support throughout the past two years. You are one of my friends, that I have made here, and always treasure your support and encouragement.
I hope today is a better day for you mate, as you deserve the best.....
