Hey everyone. I recently did some freelance work for an equestrian magazine. I got the opportunity to visit the horse barn of an Olympic horse rider, Guenter Seidel, and document "behind the scenes" life at the barn. It was absolutely one of the coolest things I've ever done and I loved every minute of it. I sent a slideshow of the images to the folks that own the multi million dollar barn. They really like the photos and want to buy a DVD with 50 of the photo files. They plan to make 2 photo books out of the files. What should I charge for the DVD?
THANKS!!!!!

What exactly are they purchasing?
Full rights for all 50 files? as in the copyright as well?
Or just a limited usage rights they want? as in two photo books, limited to X number of printings.. or just personal single prints?
If just single printing personal use, $1,000 should be sufficient.
However, if for commercial purposes you might want to charge quite a bit more. But it really also depends on how much of your copyright you are giving away.

ya. thanks for asking. basically these very nice, elderly folk just want to make 2 photo books, one for themselves and one to give as a gift. completely for personal use. so, i guess i would be selling them the files with a limited amount of prints. |

$20 bucks a photo from multi-millionaires planning to publish your work? Doesn't exactly sound fair to me... Remember, this isn't some young family struggling to come up with the cash for a wedding photog. They've got $$ to burn, and will be using your photos to promo their barn and their $500k+ horses.
$5000 is certainly reasonable to charge.
**edit:
I type slow. Nevermind.

Since that is the case, one option may be for you to make the books yourself, and sell them as a package and no worries about the DVD.
Also, if you trust them not to pilfer the images once they have them on disk you can do that as well. However, temptation would be there and if image on disk they may as many people do, believe they own them.

Andrew, thanks for you input, i see what you're saying. But, they arent buying the photos to promote their barn. They just want to make a couple of photo books ... one for themselves and one to give as a gift to their partner. Yes, these people are extremely wealthy but I don't think that is grounds to charge them EXTRA, ya know what I mean.
And, yes, I do trust these folks to not pilfer the images :) |

If you want to take advantage of their wealth, feel free to charge $500/image. That is a good medium price for a full rez full size image. and leave a note or document within the disk stating they have full usage of the images for personal use only and you still hold copyright.
If, they don't agree to that price, tell them you are saving up to go to college. and you should have a nice healthy start.
p.s.
Bottom line is, what do you feel is fair? For your time and stuff? If the money really doesn't matter, take $5 singles shake their hands and say thanks with a smile.
What do you want out of the situation?

like i said above, i'm NOT looking to take advantage of their wealth. they are extremely nice people and were very hospitable to me when i came to take photos of the barn. what i want is for them to have these photos to enjoy... also, i happen to know that they host many-a-parties and will probably have these photo books sitting out on a table somewhere. It is my hope that they will be able to show these photos to their friends ... speak very highly of the quality of my images ... just one more way to get my name out there :) also, i don't think it'll hurt to make a few extra bucks in the deal... i think at this stage in my career though i would feel very wrong about charging anything over $1000. so, i guess im just trying to confirm that $1000 is reasonable?.. |

Love the photos Shannon, some of them are truly amazing.
I'm not so good with pricing myself, but I think that 1000$
is more then fair.
You are so talented, I have no doubt about your success. |

YOU take control, make the books through Asuka or something, thereby retaining possession of the files. Or license it so that the files go directly to their graphic designer.
That's a lot of post-processing, so yes, $1000 sounds reasonable. |

Like she said, your work is fantastic, it seems nearly everything you do is just fantastic. If I photographed the same subjects as you, my images would be just be 'snaps' while yours remain photographs....
Your question is one of the most difficult to answer... Because none of us want to give our work away, however we are too light hearted to charge for it. I am well versed in different aspects of business, but the hardest thing for me to ever do is put a price on my own work. But, its something we have to do and stick to our guns with.

You don't need to license it if it is only for personal use. Some places have easy to use templates whereas you upload the images, throw them on the pages and they print. Give me some time I need to run real quick but will be back and give you a list of printers, less someone beats me to it.

thanks. but, i would rather have the barn folks make the books the way they want to make them... they already have a company and everything in mind. so, what i am asking is how would i license the pictures so that the files go directly to the graphic designer like lynn mentioned. |

You need to find out who the graphic designer is, and ask how he/she would like the images. You can simple ask the client who they will be using.
