"Les saveurs du Palais" (Haute Cuisine in English) 7/10 Based on the amazing true story of President Mitterand's personal chef. I love the story and the film overall, but the switching back and forth between the past and future parts of the story was a bit distracting.

That one's in my Netflix queue :-)

Totally worth watching if you like cooking and good food.

They totally changed the central character's name. The real chef's name is Danièle Delpeuch. She has a cookbook, Carnets de cuisine du Périgord à l'Elysee" but it's seemingly only available in French. Should be on my doorstep in a couple of weeks.

Watched it last night, absolutely fabulous :-)

Glad you enjoyed it.

Far From the Madding Crowd - 8/10

Great score, beautiful cinematography. A good enough story to keep me engaged through the near three hour running time. Julie Christie was the draw for me. Loved her in Zhivago and Billy Liar. She's what I call "quietly beautiful." She didn't disappoint here. Her various love interests were also cast well, I thought. Nothing I need to see again right away, though.

Ender's Game 7/10

Harrison Ford, Ben Kingsley, and Asa Butterfield...okay, my kids talked me into this. Despite the grand special effects and moving story from a famous book, I felt a bit deflated with a flawless hero, and no true dark villain.

Next week's tweenage choice?

Yes, Thor, The Dark World...stay tuned!

Ender's Game - 8/10, one higher because I loved Orson Scott Card's books, read them as they were published. The movie is really rushed, not much character development or anything... I guess they needed more screen time for the great special effects. Still I think it maintains most of the important feelings from the book and besides it is very pleasant to watch. Different from the SF space saga you might expect.

I didn't read book and will put in on my list!

Catching Fire (Hunger Games Saga) - 2/10

The one (and only) thing I loved about this movie?...The box of red vines in my hand!

I can't remember the last time I was this badly entertained and especially for this length of time (2:26 hours!)

Of course, my opinion was solidly ignored by the four tweenagers who coerced me into this venture (and who are now in my living room eating all my food and playing loud music).

Other than Cinna's lastest fashion creation, the special effects of this movie drizzled to a polite yawn.

No dramatic new story line...basically just the original story line served in the form of two week old leftovers...*dainty sniff*

Well, actually the two black horses were quite gorgeous in the chariot scene, so I upped this movie to a 2 from my original 0.

Oh...counting down to The Hobbit on Dec. 13! (Me and my red vines are going opening night sans tweenagers...::beams::)

Ender's Game

Actually liked this quite a lot. Visually stunning. Thoughtful, if somewhat predictable plot. I want to play in zero gravity in the worst way!

Hmmmmm.

Only because the trailer fully enraptured me...I will forgive you for sending me to see anything with Brad Pitt in it.

Oh Dear...my poor opinion of Catching Fire already offended two Moms.

So, if you all love it, then just know my opinion is purely my own and I will simply agree to disagree.

I remain unconvinced and only slightly unapologetic.

Well, it can't be worse than the "Twilight" saga.

Solomon Kane. 3/10

This must be based on a comic book because it is a lot of confusing nonsense as a movie.

Kung Fu Joe. 7/10

It's tough to be deliberately stupid and still funny. This manages it, imho. Caveat Emptor... if you're not a connoisseur of stupid, don't watch it.

You would be Wrong

That movie is even more awful.

Oh yes...a perfect movie for Thanksgiving. A pure story. Gripping, deep, and humbling. 10/10

I never ever thought I would say this, but here goes:

"BRAVO BRAD PITT!"

I feel much better now, but you owe me a box of kleenex as I sniffled all over my red vines.

2 Guns - 7/10

Very entertaining. Somewhat over-the-top (as expected), but not so much so that it was annoying. Wahlberg and Denzel were very good together.

Extracted (2012) or Extraction in the UK.
A scientist who has invented a technique to watch people's memories finds himself in a dangerous situation after he's tasked with entering a heroin addict's mind to see whether the man committed murder.
8/10 - Very different film, really enjoyed it.

Dragon Eyes (2012)
In St. Jude, drug dealers and corrupt cops have destroyed an urban neighborhood. But newcomer, Hong, has the fighting skills and moral vision to save this town from itself.

I was a bit hesitant to watch this as it had Jean-Claude Van Damme in it, thankfully he was only in it for short spells. Quite enjoyable with some decent martial art scenes, though some of the people seemed to be immune to the physical beatings dished out. 7/10

World War Z (2013)
Not much into Zombies/walking dead type films but gave this a go. Decent special effects but I still am trying to figure out how a plane can fly from Korea to Israel without stopping to refuel or any in-flight refuel. Not one to watch if you like having your thinking extended. If you like a lot of shooting at zombies then you will enjoy it. 5/10

Jack the Giant Slayer (2013) - The ancient war between humans and a race of giants is reignited when Jack, a young farmhand fighting for a kingdom and the love of a princess, opens a gateway between the two worlds.
Watched this to see if it was suitable for my grandchildren - no it was not. Good special effects with the usual story line. 6/10

Oblivion (2013)
A veteran assigned to extract Earth's remaining resources begins to question what he knows about his mission and himself.
Not Tom Cruise's biggest fan but he did a decent job in this one. Good special effects and a decent story line. I quite enjoyed this one - 7/10

Hummingbird (2013)
Homeless and on the run from a military court martial, a damaged ex-special forces soldier navigating London's criminal underworld seizes an opportunity to assume another man's identity -- transforming into an avenging angel in the process.
Jason Statham with not as much killing as his is norm. Enjoyable - 7/10

The Best Offer (La migliore offerta) - 2013 10/10
Wonderful movie. I'm a fan of Giuseppe Tornatore's work and this is one of his best. Geoffrey Rush is brilliant.
Highly recommended.

The Hobbit - The Desolation of Smaug

For the very first time, I can only rate this movie for both a "1" and an "11"

Peter Jackson divides the story...so I can only follow suit and divide my score.

Smaug in IMAX 3d glows superbly...so any scene with him immediately has my worship score of 11.

My lips are sealed on the "1" scenes...I've decided not to offend anyone today...;-D

The Croods FINALLY became available on DVD in Australia. Loved it - again.

Yeah, I know it is silly, but it is funny, and touching, and pretty to look at. A real "feel good" movie for me.

Frances Ha 8/10 - Loved the way the cinematography echoes the French New Wave films of the late 50's early 60's.
