Bernie-8/10

Kind of a mix between a movie and a documentary. Based on a true story. Jack Black just nailed this role, no one could have played it like he did. Probably his best performance on the big screen. If you come from a small town and/or Texas you can appreciate this movie even more.

The Cabin in the Woods- 7/10

At first glance this looks like another pop-horror movie. You know, a group of 30 year old actors playing High School Seniors as they all become brutally murdered one by one. But after watching I was pleasantly surprised it was actually something different. And when I mean different I mean from about as far left field as you can possibly get. Something that has never been done before. I can say I enjoyed the direction even though it was a bit cheesy and over the top.

I agree, at a certain point it reminded me of 'cube', you know that one?

Well, figured I'd give this one a go after the above thoughts.
I'd say 7/10 is pretty close, maybe a 6/10. The characters are really horrible, which is something that separates good horror from bad. The premise was interesting, but it's not without precedent. For instance, I'd say it borrows from the Cthulhu mythos, along with some sprinkling of other topics. But anyway- it's much more interesting than "oooooooo spooky woods and there's a guy with a machete killing people!"

Greenberg 6/10
Okay, so this genre is normally one I enjoy. I love akward characters and their struggles to be in a 'normal' world. I like misanthropes.I WANTED TO LIKE THIS MOVIE. But I couldn't. Didn't like the pacing, didn't feel like Greenberg as a character really went a lot of places, and just felt like so much more could have been done. Ben Stiller was really pretty great though, and it's not like it was painful to watch or didn't entertain me.

Dark Shadows - 8/10

Much better than I thought it would be. Johnny Depp didn't do his typical weird character (Wonka, Mad Hatter, Jack Sparrow). Overall very enjoyable. I grew up watching the original TV show and was really into it when I was a very young kid.

Huh. I saw this and thought the exact opposite. I thought he very much did the "I'm a weird guy" schtick. But I'd also never watched the show, so I'll openly admit that could be a good part of why I felt this movie was so terrible. To further compound things, I saw it after Avengers at the drive-in, so it was a really weird combination of movies that aren't terribly compatible (IMO). In any case, it was bad enough that I left in the middle, something I've never done before.

Originally watched Zodiac at the cinema a few years ago and have recently obtained the Blu-ray (Directors cut). I found it very interesting and the extras on the Blu-ray were an excellent addition and provided a great deal of information on the Zodiac killings. What I found particularly interesting was how similar the cast where to the people they played. Maybe a bit on the long side - directors cut is 162 mins - but I was so caught up with it all it did not seem that long.

Giving it a 8/10

Storyline
A serial killer in the San Francisco Bay Area taunts police with his letters and cryptic messages. We follow the investigators and reporters in this lightly fictionalized account of the true 1970's case as they search for the murderer, becoming obsessed with the case. Based on Robert Graysmith's book, the movie's focus is the lives and careers of the detectives and newspaper people.

Cloud Atlas 8/10
If you liked the Avengers which was a very stupid movie, perfectly executed, then you might like the other end of the spectrum. Cloud Atlas is a very complex movie about the nature of the continuity of love, the degrees of freedom, and the permanence of death. There is a limited cast, a very talented cast on many repeated roles, bouncing through time, twisting though the role of hero and villain. There is a lot of Oscar bait here, but makeup is a certain winner. It is a flawed movie, but it tries to do so much that you can forgive it. A beautiful mess.

Dead Man's Shoes

This is an older movie but worth mentioning and watching. Paddy Considine is quite good here.
It's a worthy thriller, some terrifically chilling parts, and a twist.

Watch the trailer, above.

Moonrise Kingdom

7/10 for those that like quirky and understated humor, along the lines of Christopher Guest movies.

3/10 for those that just don't get it. :)

Very photographic in the way scenes are composed and shot (although too centered for DPC tastes)

The Amazing Spiderman 8/10

not a huge fan of rebooting a series, i loved Sam Raimi's series (the third sucked, however) but the effects crew absolutely nailed the incredible agility Spiderman.

i grew up loving Spiderman comics and this was not a true telling of the story as was the first, but still lots of fun.

Gerhard Richter Painting I'll give it a 8/10 because I thought it was interesting to see a bit of how the top selling artist alive works.

I expect many on DPC would look at his work and talk about how he must not have any talent or that can't be art because it's all abstract or whatever...then you can look at his earlier photo-realistic work and see that's not true at all.

Lincoln - 10/10 - Terrific acting and an interesting look into what may very well have happened to get the 13th Amendment passed. Might be too dialog driven for those that like more action in their movies. Based in part on Doris Kearns Goodwin's biography "Team of Rivals: The Political Genius of Abraham Lincoln"

Life Of Pi 8/10

A stunningly beautiful film and as someone who was also a fan of the book I thought it was a good adaptation. I went to see it with someone who can't sit though quieter films and even they liked it though I still imagine there's an audience out there who won't have the attention span to sit through it.

My girlfriend and my Sister (different people)forced me to go see "Breaking Dawn 2" at the theater. I will not link for obvious reasons. My expectations were so low that I actually didn't mind the movie and would give it a 3 star rating just for the last 30 minutes of the film. I expected to leave downtrodden and with no masculinity remaining after watching twinkly vampires run across the screen decrying their undying love for one another. . .but, it wasn't that bad.
