"35 Rhums" - 7/10 - A very French movie. A bit slow for the typical American filmgoer who is used to being spoon-fed the entire story. |

Exit through the gift shop, A very sneaky movie that you realize at the end turns out to be about the way money and art interact. What appears to be a blunt documentary on guerrilla art turns into an examination of success in a capitalist society, very Banksy. 9/10 |

How to train your dragon 9/10 - one of my favorite movies, visuals are great and story even better. Never gets goofy, lots of heart.
Social Network 9/10 - Well written, well acted, very entertaining, i'm curious how much of this is "true" story.
Despicable Me 6/10 - entertaining, but gets too coyote/roadrunner at times.
Scott Pilgrim vs the world 7/10 - well acted, but just too comicky, I kept expecting it to come back to the reality where its starts. |

Murderball 8.5/10- A documentary about quadriplegic rugby aka murderball. Not a sorrow filled movie about people with handicaps, this was totally about the sport, and the huge rivalries that occur.
from IMDB: We get to know several and their families. They talk frankly about their injuries, feelings in public, sex lives, competitiveness, and love of the game. There's also an angry former team member gone north to coach the Canadian team, tough on everyone, including his viola-playing son. We meet a recently injured man, in rehab, at times close to despair, finding possible joy in quad rugby.

Another Year
6/10
I enjoyed this overall, but it didn't come off as anything superb or particularly memorable to me. It's about a happily married couple who have built a solid if typical life through each other. Around them, their acquaintances struggle, searching for the peace the couple has found.
Biutiful
8/10
I wasn't quite sure what to expect leading into this movie, as I didn't really read up on it much at all. The scenarios and subject matter of the movie are pretty depressing, but overall the movie doesn't carry that feeling to it. It's about those in tough situations and a resolute hope in things improving. Bardem does do very well in this, but he isn't the only one. Good movie. |

Did you burst into uncontrollable laughter at the cat scene? My coworker and I both lost it, rewound it, and watched it a few times slowmo. |

I loved the cat scene. So many parts of that film stuck with me as well. |

Yep, I saw Hanna today, excinting camera work and quirky enough for it to avoid being simple formulaic fodder.
Surprisingly innovative.

Saw "Hannah" a couple of weeks ago. Nice cinematography but comes up a little short of "good." By far, the greatest in a long time, The Kings Speech. |

Super 8
6.5/10
What makes this movie is the interesting characters, great setting/backstory etc. I really really liked the movie but I am only giving it a 6.5 because of the clunky writing. The warring fathers getting together, the bad guy taking the locket, the hero being the sole person going in save to the girl with the convenient fire cracker side kick etc made me groan and the random plot holes were just aggravating because you care about the characters and don't want some idiot writer ruin it for you. The train scene was awesome!
In contrast Thor gets a 7 but I don't like it much and it wasn't very memorable. Even Iron man didn't do it for me for the exact same reasons. In an attempt to make the characters relevant and easily consumable they got rid of the epic-ness of it all somehow. I never felt like I was watching a movie but a show on tv. Some movies can make you feel like you've known the characters all your life and make those 110 minutes enough while in a movie like Thor the humans inspite of the screen time barely made an impression; the romance was eh? and the robot thingy was just anticlimatic. The movie was just better tied up so thats why it gets a higher grade than Super 8 even though I would definitely watch the Super 8 again.

Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides - 3D
Rating = 5
Yo Ho "Ho Hum" on this particular segment of the pirate's life of Jack Sparrow. But, my children were bent on seeing this movie and I'm game as long as the word "smurf" is not anywhere in the title.

The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo - 9/10
The book was a great read and this film did it justice. I cringe when I think what the Hollywood version will be like. They'll probably add a bunch of explosions and CGI eyecandy and make it a typical POS remake.
I'm still pissed at what they did to 'La Femme Nikita' when they remade it with Bridget Fonda... |

Untitled 8/10
Very funny parody of the self righteous New York avante-garde art scene.
Watch the trailer.

Past week or so, have been pretty lucky not to hit a stinker...
The Adjustment Bureau 7/10 - Predictable, but pretty good.
Unknown 8/10 - suspenseful and not so predictable.
Company Men 8/10 - between this and "The Town", I have gained a bit of respect for Ben Affleck, as a writer and director and even as an actor. Story was a little formulaic, but not too bad.
True Grit 7/10 - not an original story, but I don't remember the JW version, but Jeff Bridges did a great job and so did the young girl who I can't remember her name. Overall, a good movie, IMO. |

Been on a tear lately no that school is out and there is nothing else on tv.
No stings attached 8/10 - good performances, funny, likable, lots of heart.
Love and Other drugs 8.5/10 -ditto.
True Grit 7/10 - Good performances, not so great movie
The Next Three days 7/10 - More of a character study than a the jail breakout i expected.
Harry Potter and the deathly hallows part 1, 5/10 - worst of the potter movies, mainly because nothing happened.
Due date 6/10 - not groundbreaking but entertaining.
The Kings speech - 9/10 - great performances, great movie, not boring at all.
Salt 6/10 - same old.

The Lincoln Lawyer > 7/10 - Matthew McConaughey, Ryan Phillippe, William H. Macy (I think he is a wonderful actor)
Mick Haller is a defense lawyer who works out of his Lincoln. When a wealthy Realtor is accused of raping a prostitute, Haller is asked to defend him. The man claims that the woman is trying to get some money out of him. But when Haller looks at the evidence against him, he learns that this case might be linked to an old case of his.
The Lincoln Lawyer (2011)
Not a big fan of McConaughey but I enjoyed this film, not worth seeing on the big screen though.

I just saw Cars 2 with my wife and 5 year old daughter.
Rating? Hmm...to avoid a diatribe....
Me: 7/10
Wife: 5/10
Daughter: Plthbbbbbbb.....
It was a good movie, but if one is expecting the same type of family oriented movie that made the original Cars so good, one is about to be disappointed.
I just don't understand how the MPAA can give Cars 2 a G rating while Rapunzel was PG!!! It seems Disney must have paid someone in the MPAA a handsome amount of money to downgrade a movie like that.
G - General Audiences, All ages permitted
PG - Parental Guidance suggested, Some material my not be suitable for children
When I have to sit there and explain (i.e. provide guidance as a parent) because the plot is complex and why a barrage of bullets just doesn't stop, I would think that the rating of G is a little wrong. WOW! |

We just took our almost 5 year old to see it as well, and I completely agree with you. I liked it for what it was, but it seemed to invalidate the entire message of the first one. And if you replaced the cars with people, there is no way this wouldn't be an R-rated movie. I don't think there was 5 minutes without a barrage of bullets. |
