Dead Man
9/10
A bit slow, but a really good movie anyways

I just saw (for the 4th or 5th time) "Cold Comfort Farm", a wildly amusing comedy-of-manners with a twist, set in circa 1930's England... I just love that movie :-)

Cyrus - 2/10
I felt this one was misrepresented from what I saw in the trailers. I was expecting a little bit over the top comedy (like "Stepbrothers" or "Talladega Nights"), but it was a semi-drama that was bizarre and uncomfortable - the only parts that could relate to the aforementioned movies was the over-the-top implausibility of the relationship ever starting in the first place. I give it a 2 just for the acting which was ok.

You Don't Know Jack - 8/10 - Made for TV movie (HBO) about Dr Jack Kevorkian (known as Dr. Death) who advocates and engages in doctor assisted suicides in the 1990's. A difficult subject handled very well, and I can certainly see why Pacino got his Emmy for playing the Dr. He was riveting throughout.

i felt close to the same way about this film. i think if the box in blockbuster had been less SHOUTING about how FUNNY this movie was...i wouldn't have expected a comedy and maybe i'd have enjoyed the movie for the drama it was.

Elf, with Steve Farrell, which was shown to me in 10-minute YouTube segments by another tall, curly-haired redhead :-) Predictable but fun, a solid 8/10 for me.

Will Ferrell. and I don't think his hair is red. ...he is tall though. :)

Finally saw cloverfield.. I hadn't heard a lot of good stuff about it so I was quite surprised that it managed to rattle me in a way blood and gore can not.

Oops my bad, thanks for the correction. Was thinking the name Steve for some reason. His hair is curly and kinda sorta reddish. I just know Ryan's a big fan of his work!

Exit Through the Gift Shop
10/10
If you like street art, you should definitely see this movie. If you're curious about the nature of art, you should definitely see this movie.

The synopsis provided is decent. It's a documentary, but not about who you think it is. It's about the initial filmmaker, and about the art world, and about the art scene and art as a whole.
Those of you in the UK probably know Banksy more than those in the US. I've been following his work since I was in highschool, so this was just an awesome watch. But the thing is, this movie doesn't require you to know who Banksy is, or even to have a concept or appreciation of street art. It won't go where you expect it to, so give it some time and watch it to the end. Thoroughly enjoyable.

paranormal activity 2 - 8/10

i heard nothing but bad things about this sequel when it was released. my 17 year old saw it in the theater and said it scared her badly. Only good review i heard on it. I gave it a shot with my 16 year old son tonight. the two of us were scared so badly we will likely be sleeping with the lights on. if you enjoyed the first one, i truly think you will enjoy this one as much, if not more.

RED - 9/10
Very entertaining. Not as over-the-top as I expected. Great performances by some great actors.

Get Low Probably the best drama I've seen in six months. Robert Duvall and Bill Murray do excellent jobs.

Ah yes, I had forgotten about that movie since I saw previews for it... have to check it out.

I've got a few here.

Four Lions
8/10
A movie that paints itself as a lighthearted farce on terrorism centered around ridiculous individuals living in Britain that are aspiring terrorists. The humor is much darker than it appears initially, and ends in a bit of a mind#$%&. Quick dialogue but not for those who can't understand accents or don't like subtitles.

Manufactured Landscapes
6/10
I enjoyed this, and thought it was well made. If you're familiar with Edward Burtynsky you should definitely watch this. It's a video depiction of him making his photos essentially; depicting where he goes and a bit of what it's like to see it. The movie is sparse, made for the images to speak for themselves, and its seemingly more a moving series of photographs than a movie, in that sense. Would have rated it higher if I wasn't already well acquainted with the scenes.

Moon
8/10
A movie about an individual who is sent to the moon to fulfill a 3 year contract spent mining, by himself. He lives alongside a robot who is his friend and sole companion, named Gerty (voiced by Kevin Spacey). Gerty is seemingly HAL-ish, but evolves as a character. The plot takes an important twist when the main character has an accident. Quality sci-fi. Though it contains some cliche sci-fi subject matter, it pulls itself in a different direction and doesn't fall victim to their use, going somewhere else instead. Good stuff. It's written and directed by David Bowie's son, if that draws any of you to it :) It's planned to be made into a 3 film series.

Unstoppable 8/10
Much better than I expected. Credible enough. Thriller/action/adventure from start to finish. Especially good, if you like trains.

Despicable Me 5/10

Cute kids movie we rented last night. My son really enjoyed it, and there were a couple laugh out loud moments for me.

I'll give this one a thumbs up as well.

Is Four Lions in the vein of Guy Ritchie films like Snatch or Lock, Stock, and Two Smoking Barrels?

I would say that initially, it starts out very simply and with very slapstick type humor generally centered around their ineptitude. While this first part is still rather dark because we're laughing about al-qaeda recruits, it is still largely based around silliness. The story definitely departs from here suddenly and the nature of the film suddenly becomes an odd mix of a high tension drama mixed with comedy. Make no mistake, the movie is about terrorism. It's a lot more overt in its humor than Snatch, saying "This is funny, don't you see? Laugh at how nuts this is" whereas Snatch is more matter of fact to me. It doesn't say "hey, see this is the funny part." Snatch doesn't paint itself as a comedy quite so much, or present itself as one, yet it is. Four Lions almost paints itself as a comedy but isn't, if you get what I mean. If you're not offended by Snatch though, I think you'll be okay with Four Lions, but it is a bit different in its humor. Been a long time since I saw Lock Stock.

XIII: The Conspiracy - 6/10
A little bit Jason Bourne, a little bit 24, all with B actors except for maybe Val Kilmer (what the heck happened to his career anyway??). A lot of the old cliches in this one as far as the plot, but the action was decent.

Three Colours: Blue
Three Colours: White
Three Colours: Red

trilogy by Krzysztof Kieslowski.

How good movies can be, but alas never in Hollywood.

Had to Google this. I love the honesty in this quote from the filmmaker: As Kieślowski noted in an interview with an Oxford University student newspaper, “The words [liberté, egalité, fraternité] are French because the money [to fund the films] is French. If the money had been of a different nationality we would have titled the films differently, or they might have had a different cultural connotation. But the films would probably have been the same.â€

Kick Ass - 7/10 - Entertaining

Recount (TV movie - 2008) - 8/10
Kevin Spacey - A chronicle of the weeks after the 2000 U.S. presidential election and the subsequent recounts in Florida.
Interesting film and whilst I was aware of what happened in Florida in 2000 I did not understand the scale of it.
