I don't know if I'll be able to, either, haha. Its like being madly in love with someone and realizing they can no longer provide you with what you need... :-P

Its the delays in the tele range thats driving me away... I need a high quality 200mm lens by the start of the snowboard season, and Pentax is saying December now for the 200, 300 and 60-250, so we can expect them sometime in April. That, and I want full-frame somewhere down the line; I dont expect well see anything more than an 1.3 crop in a Pentax camera anytime soon (nor do they have the lens lineup to support a FF camera)

I'll probably keep my K10D if I switch, so I can still use my moms old primes, and maybe a few limiteds somewhere along the line.

Nothing wrong with joining us, Andrew!

I will buy as soon as my "Limit Order" hits on some of my stock that I'm selling. Hopefully, that'll happen this week (or next week, at the latest) and then I'll place the 40D order.

My K100D will, at least, stay in the family. :-)

So, am I required to eat humble pie and start looking towards Canon once again?

Or do I look at Nikon? No, I have never seemed to be drawn to them for some reason.

Or, do I wait for the new Pentax?

I am dithering, a 40D is a big itch to scratch, but so is a 5D.

I am confused now, I feel a headache and a wallet ache coming on!

Better have a quick lie down in a darkroom...oh, no, a darkroom makes photos!!!

The plot thickens...

Went to give a 30D a test run today, along with a 70-200 4.0 (the cheapest of the Canon "gang of four" 70-200s)... now, I was very impressed by the lens, certainly better than anything in the current Pentax lineup, but the 30D? I much, much prefer the controls, build and overall ergonomics of the K10D.

Maybe I should just start saving for a D300...

I would much prefer to get that pentax 60-250mm if it ever comes out. Because of the 50mm more and the weatherproofing advantage. But will it ever be released? and at wat cost? I know one thing is for certain. I prefer to own a canon and a pentax than to be pro any brand. If i have to settle for the 70-200mm canon, it will definitely be the f2.8 non IS. for $1100. I read some reviews about the IS version havinbg focusing problems wen panning.

The dpreview rumour mill had some pretty strong indications that the 60-250 will be on time for its december delivery, if not earlier. Time will tell... (also, will it have the chronic decentering issues that seem to be plaguing the initial DA* lenses? Pentax QC is another reason Im looking at switching...)

Anyway, I fiddled around with a D200 today and to me it was head and shoulders above the Canon 30D. Barring a strong fall for Pentax (as our good friend Benjikan keeps alluding to something big going down in October)... I'll be shooting Nikon in the new year :-P

Alright! I placed my order for the EOS 40D (body only) and hope to have it later this week. I placed it at my local Samy's. I basically put a deposit down, so when the next batch of 40D's arrive, I'll be one of the first to get one. They said they have been getting them in a couple of times a week, so I'm waiting patiently.

By the way, Samy's is having a "no-sales tax" event through Sunday at their brick-n-mortar stores. My new lenses qualify for tax-free, but am not sure of the new camera. In any event, buying it locally saves me shipping costs, and I have a place to take it if I ever need warranty service.

My new EOS 40D is here! Well, it's at my local Samy's. They called me this just now and I'm going to pick it up shortly. Stay tuned...

I'm going to move my comments on my new camera over to this thread, started by sailracer_98, who is another new 40D owner.

You don't need IS on a wide angle lens.
It's somewhat pointless.
Unless you are taking pictures of completly static things, in low light, it will do next to nothing for you.

To get pictures that are not moved of people or other moving things you have to take at a MINIMUM of 1/20, i'd say faster but ok..
Without IS you can take handheld at 1/20 at 17mm pretty easily..

I'd personally recommend the Tamron 17-50mm f2.8, it's really sharp and it's bright so IS is not as needed.

IS matters. At every focal length. I too wondered if IS at wide angle was worth anything and then I got the Canon 17-55 2.8 IS (replaced a sigma 18-50 2.8) and yes, IS matters at 17mm. Actually at 55mm I can now handhold 1/5 second shots reliably - not much good for people shots but does come in handy a lot for other things and just having it there as a safety net is nice.

With my 40D 'kit' I got the 28-135. Playing around a bit I got a handheld 1/15 second shot at about 80mm - not something I can handhold without IS (i've tried with an 85 1.8).

The newer IS lenses - the 18-55 and 55-200 claim a 4 stop benefit from the IS - incredible.

I have that one on order (18-55mm EF-S IS USM). They aren't to be released until October, though.
