this morning i was outside my home for capturing some shot for the challenge Bokeh IV, on the camera there was the lens tamron 70-300 and after some shot appear the terrible error 99 :(. after some test (and some bad word....) I discovery the following things:

1) the error appear only with the tamron 70-300 and the camera with the 18-55 lens of the kit work normally

2) the error appear only for aperture with great F number i.e. 22 to go up

3) the error appear even when the FL is very high (180 mm and major)

4) when the error occours, always i listen a strange noise from the camera and the Shutter don't close

this

is the last test
and these are the exif
Aperture = F38.00
ISO Speed Ratings = 200
Shutter Speed (Exposure Time) = 1/125.00 second
Focal Length = 300/1 mm = 300.00 mm

please someone have some idea to suggest me?

It could be a case of bad contact between the lens and the camera. Have you tried cleaning the contacts on both the lens and the camera? (you could use a pencil eraser for this)

Err 99 means time for a new 40D

perhaps at this time is better try the pencil cleaner, I have the tremendous suspect that my wife could put my head in error 99 :)

cleaned, don't work. after the shot that put in error 99 the camera, if I close the camera and turn on with the lens on 300mm position error 99 is present, if I turn on the camera with the lens in 70 mm position I listen one click inside the camera and work normally.

Try taking the battery out and putting it back in. That works for me when I get it ;)

If not, here's an entire blog devoted to (suspenseful music) Error 99!

There are 1526 posts on that thread, so there's a LOT of different things that you can try out ;)

Good luck!

Here's an error that is similar tp yours and the guy's reply, recommendkng repeated cleanings:

Canon 30D and Tamron 28-75mm lens. Half way through the holiday the camera suddenly flashed the err99 message whenever i took a photo at aperture over f/3.2 to f/32. At f/2.8 it was normal.
If I shot at f/3.2 above and turn the camera on after the err99, it still captures.
The camera works perfectly fine with other lenses. So obviously for my case it is the Tamron 28-75 lens.
Cleaning the lens contacts only improved the Err99 slightly.

Richard: Thanks for this report. I would guess it̢۪s either the diaphragm of the lens (that controls aperture) or the particular contact on the lens that transmits that data. Given that it̢۪s easier to clean contacts than change out a motor, I would recommend repeated cleanings of the contacts on that lens just to rule out dirty contacts.

Conclusion of the history: is the lens! the extensible wire in the internal side is damaged. for the riparation 80 euros i.e. 108 USA dollars today. this means that is better buy a new lens 150 euros i.e.204 USA dollars.
