Hi all,

Can someone help me confirm something please?

According to my research, the Nikon AF Nikkor 50mm f/1.8D lens has a crop factor of 1.5 if I use it on my Nikon D50, so it would be the same as using a 75mm DX lens. Am I right in my calculation?

Thanks.

The 50mm does equal 75mm when put on a DX Camera

A DX lens just has a reduced rear image circle, the focal length is not rebranded as they are on point and shoot cameras.

Perfect. I will use it on my Nikon D50 camera, so that's what I wanted to know. Thanks wavelength. :)

Just because I'm sitting here scratching my head...

A 50mm lens is a 50mm lens and a 75mm lens is a 75mm lens no matter what is is. It's still a 50mm lens if it's a DX lens.

The angle of coverage of a 50mm lens on a DX camera, would be the same as a 75mm lens on a 35mm camera, but the actual focal length is still 50mm.

Focal length is an optical property of the lens, it has nothing to do with the camera it is mounted on. A dSLR with a DX sensor just crops the centre out of the full-frame image, effectively 'increasing' the focal length.

With a P&S is makes sense giving the equivalent focal length along with the true focal length, makes it easier to see what angular coverage the lens will give.
