Nikon D50 (used from amozon for $370 body only), nikon 50mm f/1.8D, nikon 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G ED II, and a 2x tele converter.
or
canon rebel XT (body only) , tamron 55-200mm F/4-5.6 Di-II LD, tamron 28-80mm f/3.5-5.6, and the canon 50mm f/1.8 II.

Should that be "tamron 55-200mm"?
You don't show any price comparison, but the canon setup has better range of glass. Tamron's 28-75mm f/2.8 is a better lens than the 28-80mm, at a constant f/2.8 also and near-macro capability. A whole LOT of DPCers use that lens, it is a great value for the dollar.

yeah, i think the tele converter will work with both of them nikon tele converter 2x
and the two setups will both cost around $800
for the canon setup, i would plan on only using the 28-80mm if i really need the focal length for the situation. I plan on using the 50mm f1.8 and the 55-200mm the most. |

I would say get the XT body and a different lens than either of those. I'm not sure about that teleconverter, but it doesn't look to be all that great. I would shy away from that one.

Teleconverters seldom work well with lens below 100mm. With Nikon if you're not real careful you can ruin a lens.

| well, by a stoke of luck today, my budget got raised a few hundred dollars, so maybe i would be able to afford the tamron 18-200mm, i hear that one is pretty good, but i could be wrong, is it just another all in one lens? |

Why people buy SLRs and then fit a do-it-all lens is beyond me. Why not get a superzoom compact, which most probably will have IS as well?
As for other lenses, the best decision I made when I bought my D50 was to skip the 18-55 kit lens and go for the 18-70. A little later I bought a sigma 70-300, and I was a happy bunny.
It's all about priorities. Do you want bigger range or faster lenses? I went for range, but I'm looking to add an f2.8 to my collection. If I had to do it again, I would probably get a 17-50 f2.8 (Sigma or Tamron) and the same telephoto (assuming a limited budget). Missing the 50-70 range is not the end of the world.
Finally, teleconverters are generally a bad idea unless you have a long fast prime lens, AFAIK.
