Through the Arts Administration Internship, the Center for Photography at Woodstock offers individuals the opportunity to gain an in-depth understanding of the day-to-day operations of an artist-centered not-for-profit space.
By participating in CPW's wide-range of activities including working on exhibitions, coordinating events, and collaborating with CPW's full time staff Interns leave the experience with a broader, deeper understanding of contemporary photography and how they can pursue a career in the arts - whether as a working photographer or a curator or arts professional. Final projects include curating a temporary exhibition from CPW's permanent print collection and contributing a book review to CPW's quarterly publication, PQ.
This internship is ideal for individuals who are passionate about the arts, interested in pursuing a professional career in photography, art history, curatorial, editorial, and both the world of not-for-profits artist spaces and commercial galleries.
Arts Administration Internships
CPW offers individuals of special talent a unique training opportunity. Interns learn business practices and fundraising strategies associated with an artists' space dedicated to serving contemporary photographers. Candidates are selected on the basis of their interest and experience in photography and the visual arts, their ability to contribute significantly to CPW projects, and their openness to gaining meaningful experience from the program. College credit may be arranged. Year-round opportunities are available.
Responsibilities on Site: Interns will assist CPW staff with: organization and production of education programs; organization and production of gallery exhibitions; organization and production of the PQ and other CPW publications; general administrative operation of the CPW including: membership, artist services, fundraising, public relations, special events, and community outreach.
Areas of Study: Interns will have contact with working artists in the field, will learn to handle and display various types of photographic works, and will observe the process of curating exhibitions. Interns will learn about not-for-profit grant writing and fundraising practices, and the organizational and administrative skills necessary for the operation of a not-for-profit 501(c)(3) organization. Interns will expand their knowledge of the history of photography through experience with exhibitions of contemporary photographic works.
Method of Study: Interns will work at the Center one to three days per week, for a three - four month schedule. Outside reading and/or projects will be assigned. Work will be supervised by CPW Directors
Method of Evaluation: A final evaluation letter will be created by CPW Directors summarizing areas of experience and Intern performance. Meetings will be held with the student's photography faculty member, if appropriate. Interns will keep a journal on areas of study, create a resume, artists' statement, and portfolio.
Scheduling an Interview: Interviews for Arts Administration Internships are ongoing - please email CPW at info@cpw.org

*Please note all Internships require a personal interview with resume, portfolio (optional), and telephone references.
Since 1977 the Center has presented the Woodstock Photography Workshops, and education series where national and international photographers serve as teachers. Workshop students come from all over the USA as well as from other countries to study with inspiring working photographers who have the skill and desire to share their experiences with a peer group. The Workshops are a unique opportunity to meet world-renowned professionals in an informal and nourishing environment.
Benefits: Interns participate for free in Workshops and the Photography Lecture Series; have the opportunity to share their portfolio with the visiting artists; gain access to a range of teaching styles, philosophies of art, a large range of techniques; are exposed to a diversity of ways to approach the medium; take part in classes with a wide range of topics. A fully equipped professional darkroom and use of our library is available free of charge to Interns. Interns learn strategies in teaching, arts administration, and professional image making. The Intern experience is unlike traditional "classroom" education. In a matter of months, Interns have the opportunity to meet an average of fifteen different guest teachers and hundreds of students. An entire range of topics is presented in a relatively short span. CPW's Education Coordinator serves as a mentor in how to facilitate Workshops.
WPW Interns receive a $500 stipend to help defer living costs.
Responsibilities: Meeting each visiting guest artist upon arrival in Woodstock, general hospitality for guest, setting up supplies and facility for each specific event, and orienting students, documenting the classes with slides and photographs, presentation of "critique" sheets for Workshop registrants, clean up of facility, and production of weekly press and publicity for the parallel Photography Lecture Series.
Recruitment: Each Spring, Interns may schedule a personal interview on one of the date listed below. Interviews are held on Fridays at 2pm during the last week of March and the month of April with CPW Staff.
Interviews are required. All applicants should bring a personal portfolio (ten prints), resume, and two references (We ask that you provide telephone numbers and inform your references that we will be contacting them).
*Interns must live in or relocate to Woodstock / within the Hudson Valley/Catskill Region for the duration of the internship. Working, reliable transportation is required.
REVISED ****2007 Workshop Internship dates take place on the following Mondays and Fridays:
Mondays: March 19 & 26 and April 9.
Wednesday: April 4
Thursdays: March 22 & 29 and April 12.
All interviews begin at 2pm

Photo Prints by Ed Carreon, Professional Photographer
We take on local student interns from local schools seeking to learn photography skills. Students are asked for a three month internship commitment and expected to exhibit a commitment to the profession and a desire to learn and sweep floors. As a commercial photographer and editorial photographer we work with a variety of camera and lighting systems ranging from SLR digital systems and medium format equipment to simple soft boxes and large silks.
Photography assignments are physically as well as mentally demanding, therefore interns should be prepared for a variety of tasks from digital capture to loading equipment. While working on an editorial shoot Ed may require an intern to help download pictures or set up a large silk, whereas during a commercial shoot he may require an intern to help carry and set up lighting equipment.
Since we use established photography assistants, interns are not expected to know all lighting systems, techniques and setups. They learn as they go. We have worked with students from Brooks School of Photography in Santa Barbara, Cal State Fullerton, Cal State Long Beach, Santa Monica City College, Pasadena City College and Los Angeles City College, Cal State Northridge.
Internships are not paid for the following reasons. Firstly, no interns we have worked with have had sufficient digital skills to contribute to our work flow' either in the office or on assignment. As a consequence, taking on an intern costs us time and attention that we would otherwise use toward productivity. Secondly, after about three months when an intern finally does get up to speed, they leave.
Also, on assignments, most interns do not contribute to productivity because they do not know our systems and because they have little editorial or commercial experience. That said, we feel a responsibility to teach the ins and outs of the profession of commercial photography, and we do so with great care. All that said our assistants began as our interns.
Please email us to learn more about interning. We are flexible and can work with most schedules.
Here are some do's and dont's: Do not be late. It is not better to be late than to have never arrived. If it is late it is never! Don't send email and expect me to call you back. I usually set up a time when we talk by phone and the intern can call. Don't apply unless you are a current student or can exhibit some level of commitment to the profession. Do not ask me to fill out forms or surveys unless we have agreed to work together. Do not apply unless you are at least 18 years of age. Do email me more than once or call if I don't respond. Nothing personal but sometimes I just don't have time but the squeaky wheel gets the attention. Do have some basic Photoshop knowledge although strong office skills or web skills would be considered in lieu of Photoshop skill

Mark Robert Halper Photography Internship / Apprenticeship Program
Assist on Shoots and Learn About Professional Commercial Photography
The next photography internship opportunities will begin in February of 2008.
There is a both a "weekday" (Monday through Friday) and a "weekend" (Saturday and Sunday) internship / apprenticeship position available.
The weekday photography internship will begin February 29, 2008 (usually with two weks of training prior to the start date), requires a twelve month commitment, and is a paid position. We will begin to consider applicants late 2007. Please contact us in October.
There will also be a weekend opportunity in late September (please apply in late July). There is currently more flexibility to define this opportunity.
There is only one opening for each of the internships.
Please read this all the way through before contacting Mark.
On smaller shoots you will often be working directly with the photographer, and on larger shoots you will be part of a crew.
You may also be asked to help out around the studio with various office duties when necessary (this will never be more than one third of your time, and is generally less than that).
Your photography skills should be at least at an intermediate level, but even more essential is your ability to learn by observation, think for yourself, and problem solve. You are the kind of person who gets things done. You have at least enough hands on experience with professional lighthing to be comfortable with the equipment, and ideally are at a more advanced level for the weekday position.
You will be given as much responsibility as you can handle.
The schedule will be primarily during general business hours, about 8-15 days per month for the regular internship (depending on what projects come in). You must have very high availability, as projects often come up on a last minute basis and working hours are very inconsistent. Think of it as a semester abroad in Los Angeles, California, without the cost of classes. Being Mark's apprentice is a very large commitment.
In exchange for your time, Mark will be available to give you assignments, critique your work, and provide general advice and guidance. Like most things in life, you will get out of it in proportion to what you put into it. You will be encouraged to shoot on your own as much as possible, and apply what you have learned.
Other aspects of this position, or what more you might want out of it, remain open for you to define with Mark.
If you are interested in the photography internship, please email Mark directly. Include a phone number, and remember that your first impression will be your email. You must be able to meet with Mark in person to be considered. Please avoid sending attachments. Please include information about your experience in photography, and with professional lighting in your introductory email, and confirm that you have read through the schedule requirements.
WHAT MARK'S INTERNS / APPRENTICES HAVE TO SAY:
I knew I wanted to move my photography career forward - but I didn̢۪t feel like I had the time to go back to school. The internship was the perfect crash course in all that I was missing.
K. Elliott, Weekday Intern, Jan-April, 2004
Working with Mark has brought a new depth to my work that wasn̢۪t there before - He has an immense knowledge of light and lighting and will work with you to develop your skills and strengthen your weaknesses.
Robin Hollywood, Weekday Intern, Sept-Nov, 2004
Working with Mark is demanding but rewarding. You will learn the right way to do things and be able to take those skills and apply them to all other jobs in the future. It is definitely a worthwhile experience. Mark is a great teacher, as long as you are willing to learn.
Cameron Fuller, Spring Intern, 2003
The internship functions as a great next step from college - an extension of your education and a real life photographic experience.
Sharon Alanga, Weekday Intern, Dec 2004-March 2005
My weekend internship with Mark has helped me immensely in my photography career. He has an incredible eye and skill as a photographer and a great business sense. He is also more than generous with his time and advice regardless of what genre of photography you decide to pursue. Being given the opportunity to assist for him has inspired me to take my photography to the next level. I was able to acquire valuable experiences out of this internship that I could never learn in any sort of classroom.
Tracy Kumono, Weekend Intern, Jan-June, 2004
I decided to work with Mark because he works independently. He showed me that the day to day life of a "real" photographer was like. Having an inside view from both a creative and business perspective was incredibly valuable in shaping my decision to pursue photography professionally.
Alley Zepeda, Weekday Intern, May-Aug, 2005
Mark's internship is a big commitment. If you are willing to give up your personal life on weekends and take your career to the next level, this is the right internship for you. You definitely get out what you put in. So work hard, ask questions, be open to learn, and remember to have fun!
Marisa Holmes, Weekend Intern, June-Sept, 2004
I just want to thank you for the internship experience again. I've been able to utilize a lot of what I learned from working with you and been trying to apply it to my work. My teacher really likes the stuff that I'm doing. But yeah, it's funny because I use to always over light all my stuff. My setups would be kind of crazy, but working with you I've learned how to keep my setups simple and still get a really great shot. Not to mention working fast but diligent. So I just wanted to say thank you for bestowing your knowledge onto me. (from an email dated November, 2004)
Charlie Cho, Weekday Intern, Aug-Dec, 2003
Be ready to work hard, be on time, and have fun. You'll get out of the internship as much as you put in - and the possibility is endless. The gain is greater than the sacrifice, yet the sacrifice is still significant.
Sara Pine, Weekend Intern, May-Aug, 2005
You have been a wonderful mentor... Thank you.
Laura Erickson, Summer Intern, 2003
The internship with Mark put me on the right track in my career. Not only did I get the proper training to work as a photographer's assistant, but I also learned a lot about other aspects of the photography business. Marketing, pricing and client relations amongst other things were frequent topics during the internship. I feel I emerged from the four months I spent with Mark with a more focused vision of how I will reach my career goals.
Meike, Weekday Intern, May-Aug, 2004
Interning for Mark was a great experience. He loves to share his knowledge and wants his interns to grow. Mark encouraged and inspired me to start my own business. He has been there for me many times in the years after as well.
Vanessa Preziose, Periodic Intern, 2002-2003
