My 580EX (not the II version) has suddenly stopped working. I wrote Canon about it and after some back and forth, they asked me to send it in. I thought I'd post a note here first in case there's something I'm overlooking.
I've had it about 14 months and it has always worked fine. I use it on a 5D with a Lightsphere, usually pointed up at full power in M mode. The flash powers up fine and fires normally when I press the Pilot button. There are no custom functions set.
The problem is that it doesn't fire at all when mounted on my 5D. It used to, but just stopped suddenly. I cleared all settings on the camera, cleaned the contacts on the flash and camera, and it still doesn't work. It works on my Digital Rebel XT, but fires such a dim flash that it doesn't even overpower an indoor room's ambient light.
Is there anything else I can do or check out before sending it back to Canon? Thanks!

I would send it in asap they, flashes are so full of electronics that its an experts feild. BTW try another flashon the 5D just to see if everything is ok there

Now isn't that interesting.
I have had my 580EX Series 1 for 14 months...and it stopped working about a week ago. I have the Canon guy out here working with me for a few days...and so he tried it on his camera...same issues. So he is taking it back with him. He is not sure what the go is and calls it just plain weird. I will advise him of your situation when I see him in an hour.

That is interesting, Judi. Please let me know what you find out.
I've only owned one other Canon flash and it also died within 18 months. I'm not terribly delighted with their longevity at this point.
