Not the many entries this free study. I'm assuming that's because of expert editing. But personally I don't like those digital art types of photographs. I just entered an advanced editing photograph, hope it still does okay? =S

There are over 400, seems like quite a few to me. I also did nothing like expert editing.

last free study there was 650 i think, so in comparison it's not as many

Lots of last minute people will show up before midnight. I'm expecting 600+ entries before we roll.

Mine is in early for once - and definitely expert editing, but doesn't LOOK like expert editing. :)

I hadn't gotten around to entering, and due to the computer problems alluded to elsewhere will likely not get the chance. I might grab a shot off my flickr page to enter, hopefully will have the computer back in time in the event of a validation request (gulp).

Mine sort of looks like expert editing, but its really advanced. Go figure.

Hey the one I'm toying with entering would fit under Basic Editing . . it doesn't say it has to be expert editing - only that it can be.

As I said in a previous post, if it's a good picture, it will score well no matter what editing rules are used. In fact, some pictures that are obviously expert editing might score worse, because a lot of dpcers are against the concept.

Yeah, I shot my free study the first day of august, I've been waiting, I don't care if its considered expert editing or not, its in submission!
08/31/2007 05:06:40 PM · #10
Well, mine's entered. It would make basic editing, no problem. But I think it's pretty...

Should have my hard drive cloned by Tuesday, so (knock wood) validation won't be a problem. I could get screwed on my "Without a net" entry though. Fingers crossed. I've not had a validation request yet, but I'm convinced it'll come this time.

I predict it'll be well over 500 by rollover tonight.

I love to look at and vote on expert editing challenges. . . but I haven't been brave enough to enter one yet. But good luck to everyone!

I think my entry is still advanced rules anyway. Only difference I can see is the inclusion of another picture to add 'fake' elements to another existing picture...

On a sidenote, I have high hopes for this one. Maybe even a 6!!

I just finished mine.... under the wire considering how big a project it turned out to be. Took me about 5 hours to put together 3 different pix. I really like the multiple pix being legal in the expert editing rules. Gonna be fun. Not too crazy for even looking photochopped.

Hope it does well!
Good luck everyone!

I've edited and re-edit and then re-edited my entry. Did all of that about eight times over. I guess I submitted it a little too early in the month, and every time I looked at it I saw something else I could have done a better job with. I noticed something again today but I'm just gonna take a leap of faith and throw it to the dogs, see if they chew it up or not.

Edited to say: Mine is just one photo, but multiple raw conversions combined along with alot of other editing. I think it would be too much for Advanced Editing, so I'm glad we got an Expert Editing free study, even though I didn't use it to it's full potential.

I have yet to read what expert editing rules are. I am still basic editing man.
Crop, rotate, contrast, levels, hue-sat, unsharp mask and curve.
Man I am a troglodyte.

Geeze you're stuck in the stone age... I bet you have a film camera, or maybe just a big box with a shutter you have to open and close by hand... =D

Yaa I still have film camera thinking. I always try to take best shot out of camera. (I miss my mamiya a lot).

Actually I have no time to learn photoshop etc. May be this december I will be free, so I will spend 5-6 days exploring photoshop.

Hey... I try to take the best shot I can, too. I just usually fail by a large margin.

I do not know it is digital camera curse or what.
When I visit dpreview, and people post their pics, everybody keeps telling them great job etc. But for most of the photos, I keep thinking better than this I used to get out of camera (film one).

May be when we shoot with film camera we spend time thinking what we are going to shoot and are careful with what we shoot. Where as on digital we have if-not-good-scrap-it mentality so we shoot a lot more and hence lot more of crap. May be.

Expert editing is okay. But, I will judge each image on artistic and technical quality. Just because an image may be right out of the camera, and not heavily manipulated, it will not cause me to lower my vote. Conversely, if an image has highly manipulated pixels, it will not garner an extra bonus vote from me. Each image will be voted on as to effectiveness. As far as I'm concerned, even though heavy editing is allowed, it will need to be a great presentation to get a great score. And, an image with very little editing could get a great score if it has a great presentation.

So will you vote an image lower if it looks like it was edited heavier than if it looked straight out of the camera?

I went back and forth about which photo to enter, and the one I ended up entering could easily be entered in a basic editing challenge, I didn't do anything more to it than the standard crop, sharpen and curve adjustment. I do have pretty good Photoshop skills, but I took a great shot this month that I'm really proud of that didn't make it into a challege, so I decided to use it for Free Study. I don't know how it's going to do against the highly photoshopped shots, but I'm proud of it anyway!

My photograph is an HDR, it's actually my first HDR entry so I hope it does okay.
