i bought a wireless remote today for my camera, and i was thinking about the remote test for IR compatibility when i got home.
wondering - seeing as i think its an IR remote that i bought, if either the remote test doesnt work, or that they dont make the cmeras sensitive to IR if they plan on releasing a wireless remote to work with it - or their remotes are adapted from film camera models where its the film, not the camera that is sensitive to IR light..
anyone know which?

OK, I got my IR filter today. Someone had emailed after I had order it saying that the 7i wasnt IR sensitive. It was too late for me to cacel the order. Now that it's here, I just wanna give it a try but I still have a couple more questions. 1.Am I supposed to set my camera to black and white for IR photography? and 2. When I put the filter on the camera and looked thru my LCD, I noticed a circle in the center, has anyone experienced this before, and if you have, what is it and is it gonna show up on the pictures?
Thanks,
June

1.No, you don't need to set your camera to B&W. If you want B&W that is done in an editor like Photoshop.
2. They changed the hot mirror from 7 to the later models. The center spot is a result of the change. Yes it will show up in the photos. |

Can't say for all cameras/makers, but I used the IR remote that came with my G5 to do the remote test and found that the G5 is IR sensitive.

How exactly are you performing this test? Given the instructions further up the thread you won't see the light just looking through the viewfinder. Those instruction are for cameras with an electronic preview. For a SLR you'll have to actually take a photo. Even then it may be difficult to see without an IR filter (R72 etc) in place because of all the light from the visible spectrum. I'm not sure exactly what you're asking in the the second part. The remote is IR and has a sensor for it on the grip. |

ok, I did the test with the remote control and I saw the light, which means my camera IS IR sensitive. I just want to know what is the circle in the center of the viewfinder and why is it there.

my thinking was that - since the wireless remote is IR - and needs to aimed at the IR sensor from the front, if a camera was IR sensitive the remote might leave a trace on the photo - i did take a picture, but didnt really see anything but black...
thanks for the response.

I did the test on my G5 without the IR filter. The IR from the remote showed up nicely on the LCD as a pulsing orangish light. I would expect that the same would be true for an image taken with a DSLR only you would have to take a picture to see it.

June,
Can you post an example shot with the circle in the middle. I'm curious too see how bad it is.
Thanks,

Here is a site with some pretty technical info... Might help with some questions on infrared.
