There's got to be something out there...

Anyone know where I can find some good resources on how to pose people--what to avoid, some guidelines, why you have to move your chin half an inch to the left and then down some and keep smiling all the while... I'm looking for a good overview.

That'd help,
Thanks.

I learned from a very good photographer many moons ago when I just started that the hands were one of the most important things to take care of and I still abide by that rule to this day.

that's right, there probably is something out there... But when it comes right down to it, there is no simple 'overview'. People say stuff like 'chin half an inch to the left' because they know what they want and how to achieve it. This comes from a LOT of practice and can take a LONG time.

I'd love to see a bit more of an explanation of what you mean by 'take care of the hands' Jablockrayner...

Do you mean make sure they are clean and look OK or to photographically take care of the hands. It seems to me that hands are only occasionally a feature in the portrait. But I can certainly see how important it could be to use them...

This is pretty old school posing (and the clothes are fun to look at, too ;)), but old school has alot of wisdom in there. It definitely addresses the techincal points about shoulder down, head tilt, etc.

Zeltsman was the first posing guide I ever studied. Since then I have bought several books (search Amazon), and have studied with a couple of old pros. I have been putting a lot more emphasis on posing lately to the point of obsessing over it and its really been paying off in my work. I would say posing is almost as important as lighting.

As far as the hands comment - I mean yes they should be clean etc but it's the placing of them that is important - All too often you will see a hand on someone's shoulder or grabbing around the waist - Especially in couple shots such as weddings - When a couple are together I tend to lose awkward hads behind backs etc - I also make sure the finger are together if it looks natural enough - Just small things like this can really make a difference - It's not a hard and fast rule but one I like to stick with - I see so many wedding pictures ruined buy awkward hands or hands lumped on shoulders like a bunch of sausages!

HIGHLY useful. Used this today doing some posed wedding shots. Made a difference in a few shots, not so much because of making a picture better, but merely because - as the link described - I wasn't merely experimenting anymore. I was looking at things with purpose...

OOh. very, very cool.
