im looking at getting a pentax camera because i got some really good lenses from like the 80's, but none of them can get an apeture faster than 2.8, does anyone know of a lens for pentax that has an apature of like 1.8 or lower, kind of like the canon f/1.8 50mm lense? btw is the k10d worth the extra $300 compared to the k100d? and one more thing, does anyone know, on my old lenses, the apature is set on the lens, kind of like a focusing ring, but for the aparure, so will the camera be able to sense the light to calculate the right exposure?

ps, i dont think i spelled apature right...

Pentax has a number of fast primes; the cheapest is the 50mm f1.4, which is more expensive than the canon or nikon versions at $200 or so, but which is a fantastic lens; it's a little soft wide open but they all are. They also make a manual focus 50mm f1.2. There's a 43mm f1.9, and a 31mm f1.8, and an 85 f1.4... the list goes on. See here.

I'm very happy with my pentax; I can't rent lenses anywhere, and the line is smaller than for the big boys, but the quality is second to none.

Every k-mount lens ever made will work on the DSLRs, with the caveat that the M-series lenses (full manual) require a workaround to get the metering right (because of the very problem you mention). If your aperture ring has an "A" on it, however, it will work seamlessly with the camera.

From wikipedia's discussion of the k-mount:

""Crippled" KAF mount

The "crippled" KAF mount is used on the MZ-30/ZX-30, MZ-50/ZX-50, MZ-60/ZX-60, the *ist series and recent K series digital cameras. The only difference between the regular KAF mount and the crippled version is the removal of the mechanical stop-down coupler/indicator. The result is that most of these bodies can only correctly use lenses which have an "A" setting on the aperture ring or "crippled" KAF lenses. With a K/M (also known as "pre-A") lens, the body cannot tell what aperture the lens is set to with the "crippled" mount. The *ist series and K series digital cameras have a work-around which allows K/M lenses to be used in full manual exposure mode by simply pressing the AE-Lock button to stop down the lens and take a meter reading. While often adequate, in some circumstances this work-around produces problems with metering range, metering accuracy, 3rd party focus screens, and composing shots in changing lighting conditions. The onbody flash only fires at full power, making it useless with pre-A lenses."

I'm far from a lens expert but there are several 50mm's available with a faster aperture than f2. The questions is do you want autofocus or manual focus.

As for your old glass, if it has an aperture ring and is not an autofocus lens, you will need to shoot in manual mode. I believe each Pentax DSLR has a slightly different method for doing this, as they have different features and controls.

I recommend you spend some time at DPReview Pentax Forum and Pentax Forums for lens information and body information.

Personnaly, I love my DS but there are times it would be nice to have the build in IS in the K100D.

I'm in the process of getting some Pentax gear to replace my Minolta gear which was stolen a few weeks ago, so I've been thinking about some similar things to you.

One of the lenses I'm getting is the Pentax 50/1.4. Happy to give you an initial opinion of it once I've got it, if you're still thinking at that stage.

Regarding the K10D, the main differences from the K100D are:
- 10 megapixels rather than 6 (debatable whether this is an advantage or a disadvantage :)
- Exposure compensation +/- 3EV rather than 2
- Better drive shooting (unlimited JPEG/12 RAW vs. 5 JPEG/3 RAW)
- Anti-sensor dust features
- Body seals
- Pentaprism rather than Pentamirror
- L-Ion rechargeable vs. AA batteries
- Better noise reduction

The question is, do these benefits represent enough value for you to go in that direction? I decided to go with the 10D but I could equally understand someone going the other way.

Every Pentax lens ever made. As you can see by browsing Bojidar Dimitrov's excellent website, Pentax has a plethora of fast lenses available, especially if you're looking for older manual lenses.

What a great resource - very valuable for me as a soon-to-be Pentax owner. Thanks!
