I have the same problem. Usually I do one of these things. I convert to B&W and see if it looks ok. Otherwise I try to see if the largest size I can get is still easily viewable. If none of those work, I don't enter the challenge generally speaking. As a result I rarely get images as sharp as I would like. If anyone has a better solution to this I would be very happy.

JPEG quality (higher compression level) can cut down the file size a lot, and at the smallish size allowed for challenges here, you probably won't be able to see much if any impact on image quality. Make sure you're not trying to save the final .jpg at 100% quality ... move it down to 80% or even 60% and see how it looks once it falls within the file size limit.

I always take it down to 60 or 70. It does help some, but not enough. It would be handy if they had that optomize to file size the photoshop has.

You wanna keep playing with the percent until you have a file size around 148 kb for challenges here. You will then have the most detail possible.

Not sure if this is what you are asking but once you have dropped it down to challenge size you then save for web and you optimise the size to 150kb (for DPC challenges.)
