I'm wanting a good/fairly cheap macro lens for the new 400D...everytime I search on Ebay..all I can find are extension tubes and macro filter/magnifiers. Any ideas or suggestions. Want to stay under or around $100.00 if possible. Also would like a grip with built in battery power instead of grip and adding 2 batteries.

You can read this here.
The bottom line is there aren't really many options at $100. A lens is completely out of the question. I'm not even positive you can get extension tubes for $100 (although maybe you can't, I don't know). Filters may be your best bet. |

Kenko 25mm extension tube for Canon for US$89.95 attached to your Canon 75-300mm zoom will give you pretty good Macro capabilities while retaining autofocus functions.

| You probably will not be getting a dedicated macro lens for $100. You can make one for around $50 US dollars though that works fairly well. I bought a 50mm FD mount lens and an extra body cap that you would put on the camera w/ no lense. I cut out a hole in the cap with a router tool and then superglued a filter, that would fit the lens, backwards on the cap. That way you can just screw the lens on the cap. You will have to control the apature manually but it works pretty well. It's not what I use b/c I have the 100 f2.8 macro lens, but for the price it will get it done. If you are really intrested in that method PM me and I'll post pics of my contraption. |

That would work, but you'd need a light-weight large-aperture prime like the 50/1.8 to reverse. Reversing a zoom on a zoom is not going to work well. In particular, you'd be hanging a relatively heavy lens off the end of a consumer zoom. Not a good idea. Optically, it may not even work.
So, you could buy the 50/1.8 and a reversing ring for less than $100, and for a little more you could get an extension tube to use with the 50/1.8, then you'd have some real flexibility.

| This is not really a option but it could be. I have a cheap quantry 90mm zoom lens that I dropped on accident and know the front of it can pop off and I use it as a macro with just the lens closest to the camera. |
