Well, it's taken me 5 weeks and over 1,000 shots but at last I'm feeling comfortable with the D40. In fact, today I produced some of my best ever family shots, mostly down to the ability to capture that 'moment' with no shutter lag.

I read something about the learning curve and that you can dip down occasionally before curving upwards again. And now I can see the wisdom in this. My first session with the D40 was an unproductive and frustrating trip to Edinburgh where I couldn't even get the basics of exposure figured out in my head.

But today I just set it to 'P' mode and flicked the dial only when I needed shallower DOF. As I was outdoors I popped the flash on -2.0 power for fill, and that was about it. I let the camera do the work which let me kind of forget about it - I could just lie on the ground and work on the composition. :)
