I think I have a good guess which is yours. Nice one! |
Not mine, it hasn't been entered in anything yet. Stay tuned. |

Wow, that is pretty cool. What time did you shoot yours? We probably got it about the same time. I'll go check my exif and see my time...

Some of mine have nice color, but they all seem blurry -- at the moments right as totality occurred I was up to about a 2-second exposure. :-( |

My exposure times varied, The slowest shutter I used was less than 1 sec. I was using a 500mm lens with a 2x convertor so I was filling a good portion of the frame with light from the moon which allowed the short exposure times.
My photo was on the news tonight during the weather segment. Which made it even more worth while.

Nice to see some of you got some good photos! Still no camera gear for me (except my ultra-basic compact camera - not worth even trying to photograph eclipses with it) but it was a beautiful clear night here so I got a good view of it. First total lunar eclipse I've seen, looking forward to the next one, whenever it'll be.

My attempt at eclipse. Had good weather in Florida, unfortunately didn't have my telescope. Shot with 70-200mm lens and tripod. |

Here's one from just before totality. I don't know if the blur is from inaccurate focus, atmospheric interference, tripod shake, or lunar motion with longish exposure -- probably some of each!
This is the color which was captured using Auto White Balance.

Well with a two second exposure and the Earth traveling at around 730+ miles per hour in your part of the hemisphere I'd chalk it up to one of those being the issue. :)

To update this thread:
There's another total lunar eclipse coming up Wednesday, Feb. 20, 2008 -- the last one until 2010. |

Our extended forecast is actually looking good for next week. Unfortunately (for my photography interests), the planetarium and local astronomy club are planning a big public event to draw people out to look through scopes and learn about eclipses. I'll be tied up all evening hosting the event and will be unable to do anything photographically creative like I attempted to do last August:

Great link Jeffrey. For those that may not read all the way down that page, there is another link to a fantastic primer on photgraphing lunar eclipses here.

Hey John, Where abouts in the sky will this one take place? I am only going to shoot it if I can keep warm.

After the moon rises that night. The full moon will rise right around sunset, and the partial phase starts at about 7:45 with totality starting around 9:00 pm, CST. Start watching anytime after about 7:15.
Come on over to Madison. I'll be at Memorial High School with a few hundred of my best friends! |

I think this one will be from my driveway. My Camera and I will come back inside after each exposure. |

How long does it take the moon to move its own width?

That's pretty cool. If I've worked out the time zones correctly, it's going to be happening during the daytime in Japan. Looking forward to it. :-) :-) :-) :-) |

Well, what I've found says the apparent angular width of the moon is about 0.5 degrees and it moves across the sky at about 15 degrees an hour. If my math is correct, that would mean it moves it's own width every 2 minutes. |

I'm not sure I'll get lucky enough as it is fairly cloudy this time of the year here. But I do have the 300mm f/4 now and the last time I shot the eclipse it was with the 24-105. It could make for a cool collage if I am able to see it.
Will cross my fingers. |

Sweet! Maybe this year Arizona will catch it at night - last year I got a great shot of the moon after the fact, but missed the actual eclipse because it happened during the day.
BTW - Is there a thread (DPC) or link (www) for taking great night shots with a zoom lens, or just night shooting in general? This is one area I am still needing help. |
