Just out curiousity, what did people set their white balance to? I figured that moonlight is just reflected sunlight so I went with that. Now I am wondering because the light reflected off the moon during the eclipse is actually light from the Earth which is reflected back and filtered throught the atmosphere.
Just wondering....

Just got back from my public event. It went very well. We had lots of people because there was an orchestra concert AND a board meeting at the school tonight too, so lots of people milling around wanting to look. Our video hookup went off without a hitch so people could watch the partial phases from indoors where it was warm, but we had one scope set up outside - just in case - and it was a good thing. The zero degree temps didn't scare anybody. We had scads of people outside waiting to look at the moon or Saturn through the scope. People loved it. It was a GREAT public event.
I'm very happy to see all your pics everyone. Good job! |

I was worried about everything else I didn't even think about it. So mine was set on AUTO. |

Just for the record... The red light cast upon the moon when its in totality isn't light from the earth its just sunlight refracted (bent)through the earth's atmosphere. It red for the same reason that a sunrise or sunset is red. |

Well here is my attempt. One of them anyways. Strangely, it was shot at the widest aperture and was one of the sharpest ones I managed to get. I figured f/8 would be better for sharpness but then I was shooting at a slower shutter speed so that might be the difference.
Anyways, I did crop and sharpen and bump saturation a bit for your viewing pleasure.
By the way, thanks DJ for the clarification. I didn't think I had that quite right.
Edit: I uploaded a new edit. Still not totally happy with the editing but what the heck. Its a quick hack job right now anyways right?

Pretty cold here in Montreal, minus 13 degrees celcius or so. It was worth it though. Shot closed to 300 pictures. Here is a quick montage.

Well this is my attempt at photographing a lunar eclipse. It was also about -11c's (or about 12F) with no wind out there.

Feel free to comment on my settings choice and if there was a setting I could have tried that would have improved the outcome of the photos. Yes I was using a tripod. I do only have one lens for the camera, the Nikkor 18-70mm. One day I will have to invest in a longer zoom lens.. lol.
Thanks for looking anyways. Maybe by Dec 2010 I'll take better photos. |

Just looking thru my shots now, be back shortly with an edit to add pix. It was awesome weather here tonight, not a cloud anywhere, and calm with about 64 F. I didn't even put a jacket on, though I had one with me.

I'm just thrilled to have been on a cloudless part of the planet when the event occurred! I saw it all!
The camera saw some of it. This is the first shot. The others will have to wait until tomorrow.

Things went well here in Vancouver. I drove about 20 minutes out of town to the overlook and there were already 4 other photogs snapping away. A cloud bank obscured the first 20 minutes, but it was clear for the rest. I'm hoping to work on the shots tomorrow and actually insert them into a 4 minute startrails exposure of the area. It may take a bit of work though. |

I went up to a friend's house in the Knobs. The skies were absolutely cloudless! I also forgot what it was like to look up into a dark sky (with no city lights). I miss living up there. |
