YAY Michelle!!! I haven't even had a chance to check the results yet, but a Posthumous Blue Ribbon is the be-all to end-all, in my humble opinion.

Congrats to all our new top 5'ers, and to everyone for entering the Free Study in the first place, where results quite often are not quite what one might have wanted, but are what they are just the same. Off to go see pictures... (while the guy who uses this computer is not here for a few minutes...)

Scores are quantitative, sucking is qualitative. Now go back to your convalescence or wherever you are at the moment, and get that ticker back in line.

That's sincere wishes for your recovery as speedily and effectively as can be, from me & Bruce.

What are you talking about??

Hah! Good question. Sorry about that, I had you confused with Hywind, for no particular reason.

Hey Deb, glad to hear you check in.

Lea, my first few months here were spent with MS Office Picture Manager. It was rudimentary, but I had crop, contrast/brightness, color(hue & sat), and some resizing capabilities. There has to be something in Vista SOMEWHERE that's similar. There are just too many digital camera out there for MS not to try to capitalize on that somehow.

Group in general......though we didn't exactly set the world on fire with scores (Surprise!) in Halloween, I thought we had some damn fine entries!!!

Bear/Robert, I'd love to see you on Team Entropy, but nice guy that I am, I'll spare you, and the rest, from my attempts at poetry. BTW, that truck hasn't budged......the boat?.....8>)

Barbara, CONGRATULATIONS!!!!!

I'd love to see you put it out there that you'd have DPCers show up and do the photog thing if they want for their own experience. I know that weddings are a constant source of varied discussion, bu trust me, I'm sure there are people like me who would jump at the chance to show up and unobtrusively get those lovely shots of family and friends together that nobody ever seems to concentrate their efforts upon. My wishes in that field are to be the second photographer. If you were within a half day or so drive from me, I'd do it in a heartbeat for nothing.......just for the love of what I do to capture some of those moments. Best wishes.

Steve, I seriously hope you get to know who Robert/Bear_Music is. He is one of the most outstanding PERSONS that I have met here, and yes, Team Suck must have become really something for someone of his caliber as a photographer, post processor, mentor, committed participant, and all around great guy to want to be a part of it. I'm delighted to see him here. You will be too once you get to know him.

I'm gonna go back to bed 'fore I get maudlin......8>)

P.S. I got December for the Breast Cancer calendar, and my survivor is just the greatest lady!!!!! She looks super in a Santa hat!!!!!

I won't manage to catch up with everyone, but I'll try: RobM-Ouch! glad you're okay; Deb, yay, you're here (for a little while, at least); Jeffrey, I think we should all become Bruce(s); Bruce (aka, raish), stop confusing everyone; Michelle, congrats on your posthumous riboon-excellent shot; Lea, you might try "GIMP" (though I understand there is a learning curve involved, it's free and pretty powerful!); how's that light source shot holding up?; Barbara-Yay!! Congrats!; David, congrats on being in the new house, and having wardrobes to boot!; Jeb, congrats on the high finish in from the ground up, despite the circumstances, it's a great shot in any case; Kelli and Karen, I was going to try to write a poem for Bear Music-then I read both of yours and went and hid for awhile-wonderful; Christian, thanks for the pics, glad the boat is safe; Don, your comment on Kelly's Free Study entry is breathtaking; entirely appropriate to a breathtaking image (wonderful, Kelly).

Steve -- look, you get your own paragraph :) -- for me, TeamSuck is a place not just for those with low scores, though this is an important part of what it can mean to be here, but for those who can see and not just look. On the recent challenges, one commenter went around telling people that he couldn't see the processing and that because it was an advanced editing challenge he should have been able to see the processing. Silly. I don't think he "saw" any of the images, as he was too busy "evaluating" them against some particular obtuse, arbitrary standard. I come here because when I get angry at the arbitrariness that's here on DPC, at that pure self-indulgence of many voters, photographers and commentators, I can find people here who don't engage in that, who are happy to actually see a photograph, and allow the artist who created it some leeway, some latitude to express him or her self, to be him or her self. You have that; Robert ( Bear_Music) has that; Don has that; many here at TS, regardless of scores, have that. And I welcome as a friend here anyone who wishes to really see, and hope that they (and this includes you) will stay with us for a very long time . . .

Geez, how did that get so long!!

Bruce (will someone please tell me when the Bruce thing gets old? I've always pushed silly jokes too far, but I like being Bruce)

Grrr... I get access to a computer, type a nice message for here, and then because it takes so freakin' long for the system to register that I've typed a message, I got "got" by the maintenance thing.

At any rate, congratulations, Barbara!!! Pics of any kind will be good.

If anyone has sent me email, be aware that it has been many days since I've been able to get on a computer with a connection fast enough to allow me to log into my personal email. Argh. I'll try again tomorrow. My only hope is first thing in the morning, and even then it doesn't work often.

Congrats Barb. Best wishes.
To all the rest, thru bleary eyes (I didn't want to walk out and get the other set of eyes) I think I've caught up with the rest of the news.
My, a day or two off the site and it takes lots and lots of reading.
So let this be a congrats, welcome, sorry about your troubles general greeting!

Well said!

You're an eloquent, albeit verbose fellow, Bruce!.......8>)

I figure as someone who is more mouthy than verbose, rambling rather than eloquent, that I can get away with recognizing the good stuff! LOL!!!

Sorry I haven't been participating for the last few weeks. New job (which is great) has swallowed up all of my free time and a tanked camera has prevented me from taking any images. I miss being a part of this.

Noise to Signal

Il silenzio degli agnelli s’e coprito
sul’aroma cuocante nel proprio brodo.

But were they ever quiet, really,
or is this the price to pay for moments’
stillness in the mealy-mouthed incessant
mutter of immovable incumbents.

If Paris learned misogyny
when giving up the apple, so say
goodbye to Rosemary and baste
the lamb with olive oil, or butter.

Robert the Bruce

This poem has been disqualified by higher powers from competition for Bear_Music's favour, for its breach of Corinthian principles

I am practicing different types of possessing, The following is practice for a listed challenge. I feel it falls outside the “outtakes” rule because it was taken before challenge announcement , and cannot be replicated in any way that I have any knowledge of.
All I want to know if anybody finds this visually appealing. I find when I spend much time processing I start to loose perspective.

Redneck, I have to say it doesn't do much for me. But do you like it?

I find that when editing for an extended period, it really helps me to walk away for even a few minutes. Or I'll go read email or browse the Web.

On another topic, I've created a new collage of my Alps trip last year. I'm getting a 16x20 print of this on canvas - have you all heard about the free canvas offer?

11/08/2007 09:49:18 PM · #1637
Any idea how long that offer lasts? I haven't got anything with me I want printed that big (most of my files other than what's been shot here are at home), and I can't get it shipped to me anyway. But I could get something shipped to my mom, maybe.

I haven't heard it ever expires, so I guess it goes as long as the company wants to offer it. There's no hard stop. Rather, you sign up for a "pro" account. I just gave my DPC profile page and was approved. Then they give you a code to use that's worth $84 off. You get some amount of time beginning then to order. I also got a 15-day warning at some point.

One nice thing is that prices for "pros" are at a discount, and if your order two of the same print, the second one's 50% off. So I got two 16x20s for $31 total, and that included shipping! I'll just need to ship the other one to my hiking buddy.

The last time I ordered a "free" canvas print, it cost me about $60 !

*lol* The fun of being in Canada, and having the costs of shipping and duties added on to my free print.

But it was beautiful ! I'm still glad I did it.

Thank you for the honest critiques on my photo Mary, Julianne, Rob, Jeb, and jeffrey. I think the problem is that I have no clue how to create 3 different exposures form a single photo, to use on a HDR image in photomatix, in Elements 4. If anybody knows how to do this, just drop me a line, Thank You.

Received an AMAZING present today :) - My new Canon EOS XTI with an EF-S 18-55mm and a 75-300mm lens - Now I just need to figure out how to use it. Hopefully I will be able to learn quickly and post some images soon.

Eve, have fun! Just remember that some things will be different. For example, unless you change the settings, JPGs out of SLRs are generally less sharp and less contrasty than from point-and-shoots. That's a GOOD thing! It gives you more control in editing.

The post from dwterry a few down in this thread has good tips for new SLR owners.

For those wondering about that free canvas offer, I ordered two of the same collage late Monday night and they arrived today. They look terrific!

And finally, here's a wonderful recommendation to all of us excerpted from this article:
Change your perspective. Whenever you think you have your shot framed and captured take your shot and consider different perspectives. Can you get down on the ground (or simply set your camera on the ground and shoot from there standing up) and get a better perspective. Look up. Is there someplace higher you can get. What about closer, further back. Turn around. What's behind you? Are you missing something great? Look everywhere at once. Keep your eyes open for different ways to take the same shot. Tilt the camera, take a vertical, a horizontal, a diagonal. Crop out the sky. Crop out all of the land but a thin small strip at the bottom. Play with your perspective on a shot and take several different versions of the same thing.

Eve, I'm still struggling with this difference after upgrading from a P&S to an XTi. I'm still not sure how less sharp is a good thing. I can't seem to pull the level of detail out of the SLR shot that I was getting from the P&S. For example, with the P&S I could see every strand in a feather on a bird, and each strand in a head of hair, but with the SLR I just get the feathers without the detail and the general shape of the hair style. Still don't know how people get those tack sharp eyes with the SLR. Occasionally, I get a fabulous shot, but with my P&S cameras I got very good shots consistently. It's very frustrating, but I know it must be a learning curve, because other people are getting excellent photos with the XTi.

Jeffrey, thanks for posting this, I am a bit encouraged.

Dear, I am a fan of your work, and here's an old guy, gut level take on it.

Julianne as I've known her.....terrific and insightful photographer.

Julianne w/new XTi.......disgruntled and frustrated.

Conclusion.....new camera operating blues.

Did I mention that I had my D70s for three months before I realized that I didn't have it on jpeg fine setting?

Hang in there!

I think in part it is a familiarity issue. I'm having a hard time learning to use my P&S! I'm more used to a SLR, I guess, and learning to use a P&S is quite the adventure!
11/10/2007 02:52:41 AM · #1646
Familiarity - hmm. I said farewell to my D100 some time ago and got the exhorbitant D200 to take its place. I'm back at school. Actually, I am back at school in terms of teaching. I don't want to take the SLR behemoth into a school situation, so I try to have ye olde p&s with me.

p&s should never take a 'bad' (i.e. over- or under-exposed, unfocused, etc) picture

p&s can be adjusted to special situations only by choice of preset 'modes' - e.g. close-up, indoor, landscape etc. These are usually very good as long as the situation is precisely the sort for which the program was designed. Anything else and you have to resort to fooling the camera by focusing on something other than the apparent subject of exposing for . . . you know . . .

You don't have access to, or ability to perform intricate surgery on, the internal organs of the p&s, or even the sacred trinity of aperture, shutter speed and ISO like you do with the SLR

Suggestion - use some of that tedious desert downtime to find otherwise irrelevant photographic subject matter that poses problems for p&s's limited range. Work out ways to fool the thing into doing it right.

We want the pictures. Curious minds, yes, but in this case mostly idle-indolent-lazy-chickenshit-stay-at-home-where-it's- safe, warm and dry - er - minds, need to know. Well, maybe not need so much as want. So as you can see we don't deserve a whole lot and who the hell else is going to do it for us?

I guess you're doing ok for the warm and dry bit, btw.

Keep on.
11/10/2007 04:47:55 AM · #1647
Heh! I have managed to learn a few thngs, like how to set it to underexpose, how to do longish exposures... those sorts of things. The hardest, of course, is getting it to focus where I want. That, and I just tried to take a shot and the nifty lens cover lever thingies didn't quite want to move out of the way.... it's a new camera, but probably has a violated warranty (the shame!) due to "sand"....

I can set limited combinations of aperture and shutter speed but have found the exposure compensation to be more useful.

Any recommendations on how I should change the factory settings out of the box????

Thanks for the support, Jeb. It's nice to know I have a fan! You are so right about the frustration, but I hope I'm not disgruntled. As far as I know airline travel is the only thing capable of making me disgruntled.
