You must be clairvoyant. Except your name is not Clair. I was in Bagram (sp?) for less than 12 hours when I boarded a plane and headed for Kandahar (which I think may have another "h" in there somewhere but don't know for sure) and lo and behold, there is indeed a Tim Horton's here! I was delighted to see it, as I am indeed very familiar with the chain. There's one where my dad lives and when I visit we go every morning. Kandahar is a true NATO facility, now run by coalition and not the US. A LOT of Canadians - lots of French being spoken. And Russian, since many of the contractors here are from Kyrgystan (probably also spelled incorrectly, though I don't think it has an "h" anywhere.)

Anyway, in an Internet Cafe provided by MWR (Morale, Welfare, and Recreation) where we get 30 minutes per person. But it's free! :-) LOVELY weather in Afghanistan. And yes, it's still beige, but there are things growing here which is a nice change. And mountain ranges which one can see when the dust settles a bit. And Kelli, it only seems like I've been here forever. Three months to go of the six.

Deb, I'm sure by now you know that I think of you often. Stay safe, keep snapping pics, and let us know how you are doing. Glad you're at the half way mark!

Sorry to break in, and I know I haven't been around much latetly, but I am hoping that someone will help. I have a good friend who is very depressed. He is still meeting his obligations for work and attending classes for his doctorate, but is not sleeping or eating. Most things in his life are not going well, and I fear he is close to the edge. I have no idea how to help him, so if anyone has ever helped or been helped, please send some advice. PM's welcome (but I won't have access to my email for about 2 hours.

Elaine, I sent you a pm.

Hi guys, gotta tell you my news. A good friend of ours is the pastor of a local church. He gets a kick out of the fact that I occassionally stop by and snap pics of his church, it's a beauty ... night and day. So he's apparently had this vision of a drawing of the church for the bulletin, stationary, etc. We've been working on it and one of my photos has been put thru massive PP and is now their official "logo" so to speak.
It's not a piece of art, but it is exactly what he wanted.

That's really what this is all about for me. It's wonderful when what you do with passion and verve becomes known in the community where you live.

I'm not generating much income, but I'm going to leave behind some images that make people happy.

I can live with that.

You go, girl!

And even though you 'Shopped the daylights out of it, it's still all yours, heart and soul.......have a warm fuzzy and a smile every time you see it!

ETA: It definitely *IS* art!

I think the iconic nature of a church steeple really lends itself to the intense PP. Good work.

Hey folks... wondering if you could give me a little help please. I gave my niece a membership for her b-day a while back. She recently entered her first two challenges. I was hoping some of you could give her some constructive critique.

She is cwelchon here.

This is the only part of what you said that made me nervous. The order can depend on what people like, but the pricing should be pretty much set in stone, i.e., this size has such-and-such a price, volume discount for such-and-such a number of prints...otherwise, you have all kinds of potential for accusations of preferential treatment, misunderstandings, etc.

That's probably a good idea, I just don't really know how to arrive at that number. My plan is to burn a disc with images for approval and go from there......I should be able to quote from that point, huh?

My other thought is that I should have some sort of idea what I want to go shoot if all I'm doing is burning a disc and they like what they see, but want to take the disc and have their friend/brother/neighbor who works at Staples/Wal-Mart/Ritz Camera to do the printing.

Originally posted by posthumous:

I also wonder if you should include frames at all unless you really enjoy that aspect. Otherwise, it's just another potential variable for them not to like. It's simpler to let them frame it themselves.

Okay....I should elaborate on that.....I work with, and display/exhibit some of my work at a local gallery that does custom framing. There is very little continuity in pricing simply because everyone wants something different from a frame.

Keep in mind, this is coming from someone who has never sold a photograph in his life...

That doesn't negate that this is good thinking that I should get around to doing so that I can answer questions when the time arises.

Thanx!

This has been stated all over this website but here it is again - Quotes should be made before any photographs are taken.

Custom cut mats for a standard size frame are nice; frames are not necessary.

Find a lighting workshop.

Yes, maam......8>)

I was really looking for whether or not you thought *I* had the potential.

It really almost sounds like you're telling me that if I do this by the book.....i.e., get the right lights, backdrop, and put the people where they belong, any monkey can do this.

So what if I *want* to do outside, natural setting work? Do I have to be within reach of an orange cord?

I have now voted and commented on two images I *know* are Deb's! LOL!!!

Maybe not, Jeb... don't forget that fetor (Cory) is downrange (and often gets "is this yours, Deb?" comments), and there are other users here in desert regions - Jordan, UAE, etc. So what you think is mine may well not be! :-)

(Edit to add I have no comments from you on my unspectacularly scoring shots that are currently in challenges.)

And quite lovely work it is. This is the kind of thing I'm looking to do. I seem to be able to make people relax and enjoy being in front of a camera as long as we're in a good spot.
