Elaine, good to hear from you - and glad you like the rocks. I was hoping you guys would find the whole sordid affair somewhat amusing.

Good work Christian! And Deb, we do find the whole sordid affair amusing, but we'll all be relieved when you're back in N America. In the meantime you take great shots of otherwise uninteresting material... don't think I'll ever look at sand again in such the same light!

BTW I'm currently on Salt Spring Island visiting family, and here we have wolf spiders...kinda the BC version of camel spiders...yucky! Even worse my family insists we catch and release em, using a spider catcher from Lee Valley. Thank gawd the thing actually works!

When you're sitting on the steps to your little trailer, gazing across the lovely landscaping that consists of a wooden pallet, endless miles of trucked in from who knows where rocks, and concrete barriers and T-walls, you get a little bored and start looking for things to shoot. Like rocks, piled carefully on the wooden pallet, in front of the concrete T-wall. This is unedited.

You take the unedited version, slap some levels on it and throw a serious curve to it, then sharpen and add a nice border...

You try a couple of actions for entertainment:

To get a different angle of your rocks on your wooden pallet with the concrete T-wall behind, you set your camera on the pallet and hit the shutter, only to discover you've got the center focus thingie on, and the center of your composition is conveniently the dust covered T-wall. The end result is kinda cool, but perhaps only if you happen to be stuck sitting on your porch looking at rocks, then stuck in your trailer with the laptop on the bed as a desk, looking for interesting shots to edit. Also note that the pallet is covered in that same fine dust that appears on the T-wall; that dust is now all over the bottom of your camera.

You spend all night trying to get stupid pictures of freakin' rocks to upload, patiently typing in stuff that few will read (but you hope a few will appreciate), then you hit "Post" before you finish....

Anyway, one more. The silhoutte I undoubtedly should have entered in the silhouette challenge. The same rocks, only from a low perspective requiring the photographer (yours truly) to get covered with the lovely fine dust on top of the wooden pallet on which rests the wooden box (seen in the Motivational Poster entry from the above noted photographer) on which rest the rocks. Levels, then curves set to cross process a bit.

And if you think that spending all night trying to get stupid pictures of freakin' rocks to upload, patiently typing in stuff that few will read (but you hope a few will appreciate), and shooting and editing pictures of three rocks to begin with are signs that I'm losing my marbles (notice that I am not loosing my marbles, by the way), well, let's just say that these are trying times and I'm trying.... :-)

Well ... that was an incredible peek into your process and thank you for that ... although the original shot reminded me (a LOT) of a particularly neat and tidy pile of doo doo.

LOL! Yes, I can see the resemblence and I think at least one other person has commented about that. It seems oddly appropriate. :-)

And ewwwww about the wolf spider traps. Who empties it??
09/25/2007 11:24:51 PM · #679
Hi Deb

The spider traps are at the end of a 3ft long pole with a handle at one end, with a trigger (!). At the other end is a bunch of stuff that looks like fiber-optic cable. Squeeze trigger, cables splay out around spider; release trigger and cable closes gently around body/legs of spider, which can then be picked up and carried to nearest open door or window. Then you squeeze trigger again and bye-bye spider as it falls out. Very neat, though I'd prefer a pole more like 10ft long!!

PS rocky pile of doodoo? Now you mention it...:-)

I'm amused by my one and only comment. It states that there is a lot of movement in my image. In fact, there is only one thing moving. LOL!

As predicted! My commenter gave me a 6, so there the rest must be pretty low!

Hey, anyone notice the roll that Bdenny is on? Eight straight 6+ scores, a ribbon, a top 10, and two top 20!
09/26/2007 02:25:59 PM · #687
That's not a roll, that's another planet.

Way to go, Brian - good to see you didn't let the dq get to you and end up with the cuddly bear behind the dumpster.

Do any of you have this, as I always get worried when adding something else to my computer.

Here is the thread that many have suggested firefox.....

Sherpets sight problem & firefox

I've been using Firefox for at least a year now, and I would hate to go back to IE. The spell checker is fabulous, it underlines spelling errors in red, and it offers a list of correct words when you right click, just like MS Word.

I really like being able to open different Internet addresses in separate tabs. I keep my DPC home page, Browse Comments, Threads I'm watching, Team Suck threads, my email, all open at the same time.

Also it has some very nice free plug-ins. I use one that blocks ads (not just popup windows, but the ads on the web pages, and I love one called CoolIris that will temporarily open a link in a popup window without having to actually navigate to that page and then go back. One advantage is that if you are writing something, eg a post, and you want to check what someone's first name is, you can mouse over their userid and their profile will pop up without deleting the post you are writing.

It's good, and never caused any problems on my computers. I have used it with Windows XP and Vista.

that's wonderful. I'd love to teach kids poetry. or anybody, for that matter. I could do it, but I don't have the credentials.

My husband taught poetry/creative writing (among other things) in a private school, because they didn't require credentials. He started teaching after he retired from professional theater, and he was over 40. He taught for 20 years, was loved by the students and parents, and never got teaching credentials.

Hello all team suck friends.

Have been away from the clubhouse to handle on going matters, and now another tragic event has occured.

2 weeks ago our 20yr old nephew on my wife side of the family who has been living in our previous house for the last 5 years, was fatally stabbed in the early hours of the morning about 1/2 a mile form his home.

The acussed was caught later and is behind bars charged with murder with no bail before the trial later next year.

On a good side all else is going along fine :):) so keep smiling life is too short not to.

Strewth, Brian, you deserve better. No doubt he did too. Condolences to you all. Thanks for the perspective.

That's inspiring, thank you! Knowing that, and knowing that they allow even raish to teach, gives me hope... :)

Brian, that's terrible! I'm so sorry!!! I'm glad the accused is behind bars, but I'm sure that's not much consolation. My thoughts are with you. I can't even imagine what you must be going through.

IE also has tabs now. Not that this makes it any better, really. Just sayin' :-)

It's always really creepy when stuff like that happens so close to somewhere you used to live... I couldn't imagine it being to a family member.

I think "cussed" is exactly the right description. I'm so sorry to hear about this!

Seriously, Don, I think you would be a perfect fit in a preparatory high school. You are a very well-educated independent thinker with a sense of humor the students would love. You could have a lasting effect on many young lives. The administration would have a problem with you, but you'd have the support of the parents once they see how you are waking up their children. What greater thing could you do for society than to teach the children to think for themselves? The down side is: private schools don't pay well.
09/26/2007 09:25:24 PM · #699
Brian, what a terrible thing to happen, my condolences.

Don, go for it!!! I think you'd be a great teacher, the kids would just love you. Just don't let the admin see your Deja Vu shot! :-)

I'm in for this month's Free Study, though if prior Free Study results are predictive of future performance, I'm looking at maybe a 4.3 and a bottom 5%. I bet posthumous won't recognize my picture though!
