hello everyone,

i went to the rehearsal last night, and it was not TOO bad. my flash was worn out at the end of the night, but i am after any tips any of you vets might have with situations like this. it's an outdoor "garden" completely surrounded by trees, so when the sun's overhead (right at 7:00) it's doable, but then by around 7:20 or so it's SOME diffused light through the trees, and my flash.

i'm shooting with my 20D and 70-200mm f/2.8L IS so at 1600 and 1/60 or so i'll be OK, but i'm literally looking for any and all tips you all might could give me that might stick in my head at the right time.i'm very comfortable shooting weddings, but i am literally scared to death of this one for some reason. i know at the time adrenaline will kick in and it will not be near as bad as i am thinking. afterwards, we're doing family pics and shots of the bride / groom. i'm having to take my large and medium softbox hot lights for this...should be a treat. :P

Stick your flash on a stand, set the power accordingly and blast it into an umbrella? Not entirely sure what you are asking. Nor am I a pro.

try to avoid mixed light for formals - some people in the light and some out: if the light is going or has gone, it is better to get a consistent light with all the subjects than to try to use the last of the sunlight (no matter what the B&G will probably say).

Jon,

For the actual ceremony, usually they don't like you using the flash (as I'm sure you know), so you'll have to monopod/tripod it and see what you can get. Don't forget that much below 1/60th any small movement not frozen by a flash will cause slight blur. If it gets down to it, sneak some flash shots in at the end when the minister (or whatever) is done so that you make sure you get the kiss at the very least.

Or you could tie a bunch of reflectors to the top of some trees ;)

A strobist setup with some umbrellas would work better for the after formals, but I assume you don't have that.

Something like this may be in order.

i've talked to the pastor and family and they do not mind flash throughout the ceremony at all, so i will be shooting flash the entire time. filly mainly at the beginning, and then probably have to be full on as time goes by.

for the formals, they will be very limited. the hotlights will have to do for today. i will not be mixing these with flash.

ready to get to it:) leaving in a few hours (4:00)
