Why are there 8 image quality settings on a digital camera? 2 Ls, 2 Ms 2 Ss Raws and Raw L together?
What are the benefits if I have 8Mpix camera I use 2Mpix with low quality?
I only use either Raw or Best quality Jpg. I have a 2 Gig card, but it really doesn't matter, if I had a 512 card I would use the same settings.
Why do they put those options? Have you used them, how often are you using them and why?
Keeeeep wondering here

The other file sizes are smaller and smaller yet. Guess it's an option for those facing a shortage of storage capacity on their CF card. |

Even though, I understand there could be like three settings, small large Jpg and Raw. If card gets low, smaller size (good quality small size) can be used. Or maybe if someone goes to vacation, and wants to take lots of pictures and not worry about the photo quality too much.
...but 8 settings? "Small good" and another "small low" quality, or good "medium" and "low medium"
Sometimes options are too much in a camera... not even only camera but everything else these days. Load with all that features that we even won't see in our life times and wondering why the heck they put them there... I think Clinton's answer is the best answer for those type of questions,
"I did, because I could" |

Well, sure. Otherwise people on the web couldn't go back and forth about which camera is better.
Well MY camera has L M and S JPG plus RAW.
Oh yeah sucker?? MY camera has L M S JPG, L good M good S good JPG, and RAW+jpg! Your camera is no better than a doorstop! |

When I shoot time-lapse I use medium/fine jpg. With over 3000 shots to batch process it saves a lot of time, and I still have room to crop to 1920x1080. |

When I take ebay pictures, I just take them at 640x480. Saves time doing it all afterwards. |

I normally take my casual snapshots at 3 or 4 MP. If I am getting creative, or expect to crop heavily, then I use the higher resolutions and quality settings. For me at least, it depends on the intended usage.
As big and cheap as hard drives have gotten, you can still fill one up pretty easy with a modern camera. I was backing up my photos to DVD's over the weekend. 2000 through 2006 all fit on one 4.7GB disk, with room to spare. Those were done with a 1.3 and a 2.0 MP camera. 2007 is almost a whole DVD on it's own already. (I bought a 6MP in February and a video camera for my wife last Xmas)
